Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A pressure activated valve for controlling the flow of fluid through a medical device, the pressure activated valve comprises a housing including a lumen extending therethrough and a flow control membrane extending across the lumen of the housing to control the flow of fluid through the lumen by opening when a pressure threshold has been reached.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A device comprising: a valve membrane comprising a first slit, a second slit, a third slit, a short axis, and a long axis; wherein the valve membrane is elliptical in shape; wherein the first slit, the second slit, and the third slit extend in a substantially similar direction and are disposed about the long axis; wherein the first slit, the second slit and the third slit traverse the short axis but do not traverse the long axis; and wherein the short axis bisects the long axis. 2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a valve housing. 3. The device of claim 2 , further comprising a catheter. 4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the valve membrane is comprised of a silicone material. 5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are configured to open when acted upon by a pressure of a predetermined threshold. 6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the third slit is configured to open independently from the first slit and the second slit. 7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are non-linear. 8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are curved. 9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are substantially parallel to one another. 10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are normal to the short axis. 11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the valve membrane is configured to prevent unintended fluid flow through the catheter. 12. A device comprising: an elliptical valve membrane comprising a first slit, a second slit, a third slit, a short axis, and a long axis; wherein the first slit, the second slit, and the third slit extend in a substantially similar direction, are disposed about the long axis, and traverse the short axis but do not traverse the long axis; and wherein the short axis bisects the long axis. 13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are normal to the short axis. 14. The device of claim 13 , further comprising a valve housing and a catheter. 15. The device of claim 14 , wherein the elliptical valve membrane is configured to seal the catheter when not in use without damaging the catheter. 16. A device comprising: a valve membrane comprising a first slit, a second slit, a third slit, a short axis, and a long axis; wherein the valve membrane is non-circular in shape; wherein the third slit is disposed between the first slit and the second slit; wherein the first slit, the second slit, and the third slit extend in a substantially similar direction, are disposed about the long axis, and traverse the short axis but do not traverse the long axis; and wherein the short axis is configured to bisect the long axis. 17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are non-linear. 18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are normal to the short axis. 19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the valve membrane is comprised of a silicone material. 20. The device of claim 19 , wherein the first slit and the second slit are configured to open when acted upon by a pressure of a predetermined threshold.
