We claim: 1. A surfactant of formula (I): where R 1a is a —H, alkyl, or aryl; x is an integer from 21 to 453; R 2 is alkyl or aryl. 2. The surfactant according to claim 1 , where x is selected from 30 to 100. 3. The surfactant according to claim 1 , where R 1a is a radical —CH 2 —CO—NHR 5 and the surfactant has a structure according to formula (II): where: R 5 is a alkyl, aryl, alkyl substituted aryl, or aryl substituted alkyl; and R 2 and x are defined in formula (I). 4. The surfactant according to claim 3 , where: x is between 30 and 40; and R 2 and R 5 are independently a (C 1 -C 12 )hydrocarbyl chosen from the group methyl, ethyl, 1-methylethyl, propyl, n-butyl, 1,1-dimethylethyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl, duodecyl. 5.
