Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In a preferred embodiment of the disclosure, tooth attachment placement (TAP) device or for assisting a user in placing one or more appliances or attachments on one or more teeth is disclosed. The TAP device comprises single tooth jigs connected through splines. The geometry of the device is automatically designed in the treatment planning unified workstation, thereby generating a digital STL file. Then the device is created from a non-flexible biocompatible material by a 3D printer in accordance with the digital STL file. Appliance, for example, may be a bracket or a bracket shim; and the attachment may be an aligner attachment or a pad. Different embodiments of the TAP device are disclosed. Methods for verifying the accuracy of the placements of the brackets on the teeth using the TAP device are disclosed.

First claim

We claim: 1. A method for making a tooth attachment placement device comprising the steps of: obtaining a virtual model comprising a dentition of a patient in a current stage and placement locations of virtual orthodontic brackets on the dentition in the current stage, including type and dimensions of the virtual orthodontic brackets; defining a geometry of the tooth attachment placement device, wherein the geometry is derived from an inverse shape of the virtual model with the virtual orthodontic brackets placed thereon, and wherein the geometry of the tooth attachment placement device comprises an upper spline and a lower spline with a plurality of fixed single tooth jigs interconnected therebetween such that the upper spline and the lower spline extend along a portion of the geometry of the tooth attachment placement device to define a complimentary inverse shape of the virtual model; generating a digital file of a design of the tooth attachment placement device based on the defined geometry; and manufacturing the tooth attachment placement device from the digital file of the design of the tooth attachment placement device using generative manufacturing technology. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of defining the geometry of the tooth attachment placement device comprises incorporating a snap fit mechanism to hold real orthodontic brackets in the tooth attachment placement device. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of manufacturing a first single tooth jig of the plurality of fixed single tooth jigs for a bracket for at least one tooth that cannot be bonded due to crowding or missing eruption and positioning the first single tooth jig for a bracket for the at least one tooth that cannot be bonded due to crowding or missing eruption outside of the geometry of the tooth attachment placement device but still connected thereto. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of defining the geometry of the tooth attachment placement device comprises incorporating snap points configured for breaking sections of the upper spline and/or the lower spline apart. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of manufacturing single tooth jigs of varying sizes. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of—exporting the digital file of the design of the tooth attachment placement device to an apparatus for manufacturing a bracket placement tray prior to manufacturing the tooth attachment placement device. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tooth attachment placement device is formed from a non-flexible biocompatible material and wherein the generative manufacturing method comprises 3D printing.
