Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for producing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion by (1), mixing and heating silica particles (A), an organic solvent (B) and a monomer having a polymerizable unsaturated group and a hydrolyzable silyl group (C) to obtain a polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (i), (2) adding a tertiary amine (D) with a molecular weight of 120 to 380 and having a terminal alkyl and/or aryl group, to the component (i) dispersion, to obtain a polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (ii), and (3) reacting the component (ii) dispersion with a polymerizable unsaturated monomer (E), in a solid mass ratio of (ii):(E)=20:80 to 90:10, to obtain an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for producing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion, the method comprising: (1) mixing and heating silica particles (A), an organic solvent (B) and a monomer having a polymerizable unsaturated group and a hydrolyzable silyl group (C) to obtain a polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (i), (2) adding a tertiary amine (D) with a molecular weight of 120 to 380 and a having a terminal alkyl group, to the polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (i) obtained in (1), to obtain a polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (ii), (3) reacting the polymerizable unsaturated group-containing silica particle dispersion (ii) obtained in (2) with a polymerizable unsaturated monomer (E), in a solid mass ratio of (ii):(E)=20:80 to 90:10, to obtain an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion, wherein at least one of the alkyl groups of the tertiary amine (D) is an alkyl group of 5 to 12 carbon atoms. 2. The method for producing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the silica particles (A) are colloidal silica having a mean primary particle size of 5 to 100 nm. 3. The method for producing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein the organic solvent (B) is an alcohol and/or a glycol ether. 4. The method for producing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the alkyl groups of the tertiary amine (D) is a straight-chain alkyl group. 5. A method for producing a coating composition including a step of mixing an acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion obtained by the production method according to claim 1 , a hydroxyl group-containing resin and a curing agent. 6. The method for producing a coating composition according to claim 5 , wherein the hydroxyl group-containing resin is a hydroxyl group-containing acrylic resin. 7. A multilayer coating film-forming method whereby a multilayer coating film is formed by applying at least one colored base coating material and at least one clear coating material in that order on an article to be coated, wherein a coating composition according to claim 6 is applied as the uppermost clear coating material. 8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising mixing the acrylic resin-coated silica particle dispersion with a hydroxyl group-containing resin and a curing agent.
