Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An installation tool fastener is particularly adapted for fastening a top plate to a roof support member and other structural connections and is particularly adapted for use with an installation tool. The installation tool fastener has a head with a maximum head diameter and a recess for coupling with a drive coupler. The shank of the head has an unthreaded portion and a uniform thread which has a major diameter approximately equal to the maximum diameter of the head. The head preferably has a slight taper. The thread preferably has a 7.5 thread per inch pitch and a thread angle from approximately 25° to 45°. In one embodiment for a 6 inch fastener, the thread length is approximately 5 inches and extends along the tapered distal tip.

The invention claimed is: 1. An installation tool and fastener for fastening a first member to a second member comprising: a fastener having a head with a coupling recess and a maximum diameter and a shank extending from said head and having an uninterrupted thread with a major diameter equal to said maximum head diameter; a transfer assembly comprising an elongated telescopic tube assembly having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a power tool, and a torque transfer unit disposed in said tube assembly for transferring torque produced by said power tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end; and a guide assembly mounted at said distal end and having a guide and a fastener channel defining an axis and having a uniform channel diameter which is slightly greater than said major diameter and configured to receive said fastener so that when said guide is positioned relative said first member, said fastener is received in said channel and a received tool is energized, said fastener coupler extends into said head recess to rotatably engage said fastener and the received tool drives said fastener through said first member into said second member. 2. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said fastener has a maximum head diameter and a major diameter of approximately 0.26 inches. 3. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said fastener has a tapered tip and said thread extends onto the tapered tip. 4. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said thread has a pitch of 7.5 threads per inch and a thread flank angle from 25° to 45°. 5. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said fastener has a length of approximately 6 inches, the thread extends a length of approximately 5 inches and the head has an axial length of approximately 0.20 inches and has a uniform inward taper at an acute angle from the maximum head diameter. 6. An installation tool for fastening a first member to a second member comprising: a driver assembly comprising an elongated tube assembly defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a driver tool and a torque transfer unit disposed in said elongated tube assembly for transferring torque produced by said driver tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end; and a guide assembly mounted adjacent said distal end and having a locating end and a planar locating surface disposed generally perpendicular to said locating end, and a stabber projecting from said locating end, and a fastener channel defining a channel axis disposed at an acute angle Θ to said locating surface wherein said longitudinal axis and said channel axis are substantially coplanar and having a channel opening defined by said locating surface and configured to receive a fastener so that when said locating surface is positioned against said first member, said locating end is positioned adjacent said second member and said stabber engages said second member, said fastener is received in said fastener channel, and when said driver tool is energized, said fastener coupler engages said fastener and is torqued to drive said fastener through said first member at said angle Θ into said second member. 7. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein angle Θ is approximately 22½°. 8. The installation tool of claim 7 , further comprising an assembly which secures said telescopic tube assembly in an extended position and is releasable to allow said telescopic tube assembly to retract, wherein said telescopic tube assembly retracts a distance approximately equal to the length of the fastener when said fastener is driven. 9. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said elongated tube assembly is a telescopic tube assembly. 10. The installation tool of claim 9 , wherein said telescopic tube assembly comprises a proximate tube receiving said driver tool and retractable relative to a second tube and wherein said second tube is lockable to said proximal tube at an extended position. 11. The installation tool of claim 9 , wherein said telescopic tube assembly comprises a first tube attached to said driver tool and slidably engageable with a second tube and said first tube retracts relative to said second tube as the driver tool drives a fastener. 12. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said stabber further comprises a stabilizing piercing edge projecting from said locating end, said stabilizing piercing edge being the vertex of a square stabilizer plate. 13. The installation tool of claim 6 , further comprising a handle mounted to said elongated tube assembly, wherein said handle is slidable relative to said elongated tube assembly. 14. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said driver tool is a power tool, being a battery powered drill or having a cord for an electrical connection. 15. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said elongated tube assembly interiorly mounts a pair of opposed funnel surfaces which facilitate the engagement of said fastener coupler and a second coupler. 16. The installation tool of claim 6 , comprising a pair of location surfaces and/or a non-coplanar locating surface. 17. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said guide assembly further comprises at least one arm which is pivotal for engaging adjacent a roof support member. 18. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said guide assembly comprises an L-shaped bracket which laterally projects for engaging a vertical support. 19. The installation tool of claim 6 , wherein said installation tool is configured for fastening a top plate to a roof support member and said fastener is a screw. 20. An installation tool for fastening a first member to a second member comprising: a driver assembly comprising an elongated tube assembly defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a driver tool and a torque transfer unit disposed in said elongated tube assembly for transferring torque produced by said driver tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end; and a guide assembly mounted adjacent said distal end and comprising at least one arm which is pivotal for engaging adjacent a roof support member and having a locating end and a planar locating surface disposed generally perpendicular to said locating end, and a fastener channel defining a channel axis disposed at an acute angle Θ to said locating surface wherein said longitudinal axis and said channel axis are substantially coplanar and having a channel opening defined by said locating surface and configured to receive a fastener so that when said locating surface is positioned against said first member, said locating end is positioned adjacent said second member, said fastener is received in said fastener channel, and when said driver tool is energized, said fastener coupler engages said fastener and is torqued to drive said fastener through said first member at said angle Θ into said second member. 21.
