Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An instrument manipulator and a robotic surgical system including an instrument manipulator are provided. In one embodiment, an instrument manipulator includes a plurality of independent actuator drive modules, each of the plurality of actuator drive modules including an actuator output, wherein each of the actuator outputs are configured to independently actuate a corresponding actuator input of a surgical instrument without force input from another actuator output. The instrument manipulator further includes a frame housing the plurality of independent actuator drive modules, the frame including a distal end from which each of the actuator outputs distally protrude for engaging the corresponding actuator inputs of the surgical instrument.

We claim: 1. An instrument manipulating system comprising: a manipulator comprising a first actuator drive module and a second actuator drive module, the manipulator being removably engageable with an instrument to support the instrument in a mounted state; the first actuator drive module comprising a linear motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument the linear motion output is linearly movable relative to the instrument and is arranged to transmit a linear drive motion to a linear motion input of the instrument; and the second actuator drive module comprising a rotary motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument the rotary motion output is arranged to transmit a rotary drive motion to a rotary motion input of the instrument. 2. The manipulating system of claim 1 , the first actuator drive module further comprising: a motor; and a rotary to linear motion converter coupled to the motor and coupled to the linear motion output. 3. The manipulating system of claim 2 , the rotary to linear motion converter comprising a ball screw assembly. 4. The manipulating system of claim 2 , the first actuator drive module further comprising an encoder coupled to the motor. 5. The manipulating system of claim 1 , the linear motion output comprising ar end of a link. 6. The manipulating system of claim 1 , the linear motion output comprising a lever. 7. The manipulating system of claim 1 , further comprising: an output gimbal coupled to the linear motion output, the linear motion output being coupled to the output gimbal to transfer linear motion to the output gimbal. 8. The manipulating system of claim 7 , wherein the linear motion input of the instrument comprises a gimbal. 9. The manipulating system of claim 8 , further comprising: the instrument in the mounted state with the manipulator. 10. The manipulating system of claim 9 , wherein the linear motion input of the instrument comprises a lever. 11. The manipulating system of claim 9 , wherein the rotary motion input of the instrument comprises a disc. 12. The manipulating system of claim 9 , wherein in the mounted state: the instrument is coupled to both of the first actuator drive module and the second actuator drive module. 13. The manipulating system of claim 12 , further comprising: an adaptor; wherein the instrument is coupled to the first actuator drive module via the adaptor; and wherein the instrument is coupled to the second actuator drive module via the adaptor. 14. The manipulating system of claim 1 , the second actuator drive module comprising: a motor; and a roll output disc coupled to the motor, the rotary motion output comprising the roll output disc. 15. The manipulating system of claim 14 , the second actuator drive module further comprising: spur gears coupled to the motor and to the roll output disc to transfer rotary motion of the motor to the roll output disc. 16. The manipulating system of claim 14 , the second actuator drive module further comprising an encoder coupled to the motor. 17. The manipulating system of claim 1 , further comprising: an adaptor; wherein the linear motion output is arranged to drive the linear motion input of the instrument via the adaptor; and wherein the rotary motion output is arranged to drive the rotary motion input of the instrument via the adaptor. 18. An instrument manipulating system comprising: a manipulator comprising a first actuator drive module and a second actuator drive module, the manipulator being removably engageable with an instrument to support the instrument in a mounted state; the first actuator drive module comprising a linear motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument, the linear motion output is arranged to transfer actuation forces by linear motion to a linear motion input of the instrument; and the second actuator drive module comprising a rotary motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument, the rotary motion output is arranged to transfer actuation forces by rotatory motion to a rotary motion input of the instrument. 19. An instrument manipulating system comprising: a manipulator removably engageable with an instrument to support the instrument in a mounted state, the manipulator comprising a face that interfaces with the instrument in the mounted state, a first actuator drive module, and a second actuator drive module; the first actuator drive module comprising a linear motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument, the linear motion output is arranged to drive a linear motion input of the instrument by moving linearly relative to the face of the manipulator; and the second actuator drive module comprising a rotary motion output, wherein in the mounted state of the instrument, the rotary motion output is arranged to drive a rotary motion input of the instrument by rotating in a plane parallel to the face.
