Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and methods for enhancing operator situational awareness are disclosed. For example, one method includes monitoring a plurality of radio transmissions associated with a plurality of vehicles in a first traffic flow pattern, monitoring a second traffic flow pattern in a vicinity of a vehicle of the plurality of vehicles, monitoring at least one weather value for a destination site for the plurality of vehicles, proposing a destination approach for the vehicle in response to the monitoring, evaluating an impact of the proposed destination approach on an existing travel path for the vehicle, and generating a second travel path for the vehicle in response to the evaluating.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of using a predictor engine to update an electronic device onboard a vehicle, the method comprising: receiving travel path information for each vehicle of a plurality of vehicles in transit; receiving traffic pattern information for the plurality of vehicles in transit, the traffic pattern information including route patterns of each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles in the vicinity of a first vehicle of the plurality of vehicles; receiving weather information for a prospective destination of the plurality of vehicles in transit; determining if a clearance request has been made by a traffic controller for any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle in a traffic pattern; continuously or periodically evaluating the traffic pattern to determine if any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from a predetermined route pattern; in response to determining the clearance request has been made or in response to determining a vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from its predetermined route pattern, determining a new runway and associated arrival procedures for the diverting vehicle; and generating an output record to be forwarded to an electronic device onboard the first vehicle, the output record including the new runway and associated arrival procedures. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving travel path information for each vehicle of a plurality of vehicles in transit comprises receiving flight path information for each aircraft of a plurality of aircraft in flight. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: using the electronic device onboard the vehicle for: processing a predicted runway and associated procedural information received from the predictor engine; determining if the predictor engine has predicted that a change to a current flight plan is to occur; in response to determining that the change to the current flight plan is predicted to occur, generating a new flight plan including the predicted change; displaying a visual representation of a predicted flight plan to a user; and in response to accepting a flight plan change issued by the traffic controller, uploading the new flight plan into a flight management system of the first vehicle. 4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising, using the electronic device onboard the vehicle for generating a plurality of lateral and vertical flight trajectories for the first vehicle for the new flight plan. 5. A system for updating an electronic device onboard a vehicle, the system comprising; at least one memory storing instructions; and at least one processor executing the instructions to perform operations, the operations comprising: receiving travel path information for each vehicle of a plurality of vehicles in transit; receiving traffic pattern information for the plurality of vehicles in transit, the traffic pattern information including route patterns of each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles in the vicinity of a first vehicle of the plurality of vehicles; receiving weather information for a prospective destination of the plurality of vehicles in transit; determining if a clearance request has been made by a traffic controller for any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle in a traffic pattern; continuously or periodically evaluating the traffic pattern to determine if any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from a predetermined route pattern; in response to determining the clearance request has been made or in response to determining a vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from its predetermined route pattern, determining a new runway and associated arrival procedures for the diverting vehicle; and generating an output record to be forwarded to an electronic device onboard the first vehicle, the output record including the new runway and associated arrival procedures. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the operations further comprising, using the electronic device onboard the vehicle for: processing a predicted runway and associated procedural information received from the predictor engine; determining if the predictor engine has predicted that a change to a current flight plan is to occur; in response to determining that the change to the current flight plan is predicted to occur, generating a new flight plan including the predicted change; displaying a visual representation of a predicted flight plan to a user; and in response to accepting a flight plan change issued by the traffic controller, uploading the new flight plan into a flight management system of the first vehicle. 7. A system for updating an electronic device onboard a vehicle, the electronic device being connected to a predictor engine, the system comprising: at least one memory storing instructions; and at least one processor executing the instructions to perform operations, the operations comprising: processing a predicted runway and associated procedural information received from a predictor engine; determining if the predictor engine has predicted that a change to a current flight plan is to occur; in response to determining that the change to the current flight plan is predicted to occur, generating a new flight plan including the predicted change; displaying a visual representation of a predicted flight plan to a user; and in response to accepting a flight plan change issued by a traffic controller, uploading the new flight plan into a flight management system. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprising, using the predictor engine: receiving travel path information for each vehicle of a plurality of vehicles in transit; receiving traffic pattern information for the plurality of vehicles in transit, the traffic pattern information including route patterns of each vehicle of the plurality of vehicles in the vicinity of a first vehicle of the plurality of vehicles, the first vehicle being associated with the EFB; receiving weather information for a prospective destination of the plurality of vehicles in transit; determining if a clearance request has been made by a traffic controller for any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle in a traffic pattern; continuously or periodically evaluating the traffic pattern to determine if any vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from a predetermined route pattern; in response to determining the clearance request has been made or in response to determining a vehicle ahead of the first vehicle is diverting away from its predetermined route pattern, determining a new runway and associated arrival procedures for the diverting vehicle; and generating an output record to be forwarded to the EFB of the first vehicle, the output record including the new runway and associated arrival procedures.
