Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The technology disclosed relates to a platform for ultra-fast, ad-hoc data exploration and faceted navigation on integrated, heterogenous data sets. The disclosed method of declarative specification of visualization queries, display formats and bindings represents queries, widgets and bindings combined on a dashboard in real time, with flexible display options for analyzing data and conveying analysis results.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for live dashboard updating, comprising: extracting data from a data repository; performing a light-weight transformation on the extracted data to create a plurality of separate precursor read-only pre-packaged data sets for querying; storing the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets in a general-purpose distributed memory caching system; performing a heavy-weight transformation on each of the stored plurality of precursor read-only pre-packaged data sets to create a new read-only pre-packaged data set for querying; storing the new read-only pre-packaged data set in the general-purpose distributed memory caching system; receiving, based at least in part on a user input to a dashboard in a dashboard editing mode, a user selection indicating a filtering control; executing a query on the new read-only pre-packaged data set stored in the general-purpose distributed memory caching system based at least in part on the user selection; and updating data displayed on the dashboard using results of the executed query, wherein the dashboard remains in the dashboard editing mode during the receiving, the executing, and the updating. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: accessing a configuration file stored in memory, wherein the configuration file comprises dashboard-related code comprising definitions for widgets, definitions for queries, definitions for bindings, or a combination thereof; and executing at least a portion of the dashboard-related code, wherein the query is executed on the new read-only pre-packaged data set based at least in part on the dashboard-related code. 3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: executing a widget, wherein the widget indicates a visual representation of data on the dashboard, and wherein executing the widget comprises: executing an initial query on the new read-only pre-packaged data set; and rendering the visual representation of data on the dashboard based at least in part on results of the executed initial query. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein updating the data displayed on the dashboard further comprises: re-executing the widget based at least in part on the user selection, wherein re-executing the widget comprises executing the query on the new read-only pre-packaged data set; and re-rendering the visual representation of data on the dashboard based at least in part on the results of the executed query. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the widget comprises a first widget and the visual representation of data comprises a first visual representation of data, the method further comprising: executing a second widget, wherein the second widget indicates a second visual representation of data on the dashboard, and wherein the second widget comprises a binding to the first widget; identifying an update to the first visual representation of data based at least in part on the executed query; and updating the second visual representation of data based at least in part on the identified update to the first visual representation of data and the binding to the first widget. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein: the user input to the dashboard comprises a mouse click on a portion of the visual representation of data on the dashboard; and the filtering control comprises a filtering, regrouping, or selection action corresponding to at least one parameter of the portion of the visual representation of data. 7. The method of claim 3 , wherein the visual representation of data comprises a number field, a text field, a pie chart, a donut chart, a bar chart, a stacked bar chart, a line chart, a scatter plot, a timeline, a table, or a combination thereof. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: recording the executed query in memory; receiving, based at least in part on an additional user input to the dashboard in the dashboard editing mode, an additional user selection indicating the filtering control; and re-executing the executed query on the new read-only pre-packaged data set stored in the general-purpose distributed memory caching system based at least in part on the additional user selection and the recorded executed query in the memory. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: extracting additional data, updated data, or a combination thereof from the data repository; transforming the extracted additional data, updated data, or the combination thereof into an updated plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets for querying; and storing the updated plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets in the general-purpose distributed memory caching system. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein extracting the data from the data repository, transforming the extracted data into the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets, and storing the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets comprise: performing an extract, load, transform (ELT) process, an extract, transform, load (ETL) process, or an extract, transform, load, transform (ETLT) process on the extracted data to generate the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets and store the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein transforming the extracted data into the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets comprises: performing, on the extracted data, a data selection transformation, one or more mathematical operations, a translation transformation, a sorting operation, a joining or aggregation transformation, a clustering transformation, a normalization transformation, a denormalization transformation, a flattening transformation, a validation process, a registration process, or a combination thereof. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein: performing the heavy-weight transformation comprises: performing an augment transformation on the set of precursor read-only pre-packaged data sets to obtain the new read-only pre-packaged data set. 13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: implementing a global filtering condition for the dashboard; and modifying the new read-only pre-packaged data set in the general-purpose distributed memory caching system based at least in part on the global filtering condition. 14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the query comprises an indication of one or more read-only pre-packaged data sets for data retrieval, an indication of one or more values to retrieve, an indication of limits for the one or more values to retrieve, an indication of an order for the one or more values to retrieve, an indication of one or more filtering conditions, an indication of a chart type, or a combination thereof. 15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the extracted data is served by one or more backend system servers of the data repository. 16. The method of claim 1 , wherein each read-only pre-packaged data set of the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets comprises a respective timestamp and respective access permissions. 17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of read-only pre-packaged data sets comprise dashboard-specific read-only pre-packaged data sets associated with the dashboard. 18. An apparatus for live dashboard updating, comprising: a processor, memory in electronic communication with the processor; and instructions stored in the memory and executable by the processor to cause the apparatus to: extract data from a data repository; perform a light-weight transformation on the extracted data to create a plurality of separate precursor read-only pre-packaged data sets for querying;
