A gap joint for use with a gap sub for electromagnetic telemetry. The gap joint has a replaceable uphole shoulder on the male gap joint component, which may be composed of a sacrificial material, to extend gap joint useful life where there is electrolysis of the component outside diameter. The gap joint also has a thicker outside diameter seal to reduce the risk of underlying O-ring extrusion and failure, again extending gap joint useful life. The thicker seal may also be able to withstand higher pressures before collapsing or experiencing punctures in unsupported areas. The replaceable shoulder and outside diameter seal can be used separately or together in a gap joint.

The invention claimed is: 1. A gap joint for use in electromagnetic telemetry applications, the gap joint comprising: a female gap joint component; a male gap joint component configured for at least partial insertion into the female gap joint component; an electrically isolative material disposed between the female gap joint component and the male gap joint component; a circumferential recess in an outer surface of the male gap joint component and in an outer surface of the female gap joint component; and a seal member configured for receipt in the circumferential recess so as to overlie the outer surface of the male gap joint component and the outer surface of the female gap joint component. 2. The gap joint of claim 1 further comprising at least one O-ring seal disposed in the circumferential recess and overlain by the seal member. 3. The gap joint of claim 1 wherein the seal member comprises an uphole edge to abut an uphole inner surface of the circumferential recess. 4. The gap joint of claim 3 wherein the seal member further comprises a downhole edge to abut a downhole inner surface of the circumferential recess. 5. The gap joint of claim 1 wherein the seal member is in the range of 0.100 to 0.500 inches thick. 6. The gap joint of claim 1 , further comprising: a replaceable member coupled to at least a portion of the gap joint, wherein the replaceable member comprises at least a portion thereof that exhibits during use a degradation by electrolysis at a higher rate in comparison to the female gap joint component end or the male gap joint component. 7. The gap joint of claim 6 , wherein the replaceable member is located on the female gap joint component. 8. The gap joint of claim 6 , wherein the replaceable member is located on the male gap joint component. 9. The gap joint of claim 8 , wherein the replaceable member forms a shoulder where the seal member abuts. 10. The gap joint of claim 6 , wherein a material of the replaceable member is selected from the group consisting of copper, beryllium copper, a zinc-based material, aluminum alloys, iron, and mild steel. 11. A gap joint for use in electromagnetic telemetry applications, the gap joint comprising: a female gap joint component; a male gap joint component comprising opposed first and second ends, the first end configured for at least partial insertion into the female gap joint component; an electrically isolative material disposed between the female gap joint component and the male gap joint component; a replaceable member configured for connection to the second end of the male gap joint component; a circumferential recess in an outer surface of the male gap joint component and in an outer surface of the female gap joint component; and a seal member configured for receipt in the circumferential recess so as to overlie the outer surface of the male gap joint component and the outer surface of the female gap joint component. 12. The gap joint of claim 11 wherein the replaceable member comprises a shoulder, and an edge of the seal member abuts the shoulder. 13. The gap joint of claim 12 wherein the seal member abuts both the shoulder of the replaceable member and an inner surface of the circumferential recess. 14. The gap joint of claim 11 wherein the replaceable member is composed of a material that loses electrons during use preferentially to other parts of the gap joint axially displaced from the replaceable member. 15. The gap joint of claim 14 wherein a material of the replaceable member is selected from the group consisting of copper, beryllium copper, and a zinc-based material. 16. The gap joint of claim 11 wherein the seal member is composed of polyether ether ketone.
