Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of operating an end effector of a surgical instrument includes supplying voltage to a motor disposed in a transmission mechanism of a surgical instrument having a shaft and an end effector at a distal end of the shaft; moving a component of the end effector between a first position and a second position via a drive system coupled to the motor; and placing a limit switch in a first state during moving of the end effector component, and in a second state when the end effector component is at one of the first position or the second position.

What is claimed is: 1. A teleoperated robotic surgical system, comprising: a surgical instrument comprising: a shaft, an end effector configured to perform one or more surgical procedures, and a transmission mechanism configured to transmit force to actuate the surgical instrument, wherein the transmission mechanism comprises: an electric motor operably coupled to control a component of the end effector so as to drive movement of the component of the end effector; and a limit switch operably coupled to the motor; a patient console comprising an interface configured to provide drive input to the transmission mechanism of the surgical instrument in an engaged state of the interface with the transmission mechanism; a surgeon console comprising: one or more input devices configured to be manipulated, wherein the surgeon console is configured to transmit signals to control the surgical instrument in response to manipulation of the one or more input devices; and a control console configured to receive and transmit signals to and from the patient console and the surgeon console to control the surgical instrument, wherein the control console is configured to transmit electrical signals to control the motor, wherein the limit switch is configured to provide position information of the component of the end effector to the control console. 2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the limit switch is: in a first state on a condition that the component of the end effector is between a first position and a second position, and in a second state on a condition that the component of the end effector is at the first position, and in the second state on a condition that the component of the end effector is at the second position. 3. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the component of the end effector comprises a cutting blade, and wherein the first position is a fully-retracted position of the cutting blade and the second position is a fully-extended position of the cutting blade. 4. The system according to claim 2 , wherein: the limit switch comprises a button, wherein the first state comprises a depressed position of the button, and wherein the second state comprises an extended position of the button. 5. The system according to claim 4 , wherein the transmission mechanism further comprises a gear, the motor operably coupled to impart rotary motion to the gear, the gear comprising a flange arranged to rotate about an axis of the gear as the gear rotates and engage the button as the gear rotates. 6. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the flange comprises one or more notches positioned to receive the button on the condition that the component of the end effector is in the first position or in the second position. 7. The system according to claim 2 , wherein a first operating voltage is provided to the motor in the first state of the limit switch and a second operating voltage is provided to the motor in the second state of the limit switch, the first operating voltage being higher than the second operating voltage. 8. The system according to claim 2 , further comprising: a drive system operably coupled to the motor and the component of the end effector, the motor configured to transmit force through the drive system to move the component of the end effector between the first position and the second position, wherein the drive system is operably coupled to the limit switch to actuate the limit switch into the first state and the second state based on a position of the component of the end effector. 9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the limit switch comprises a trigger mechanism that is actuatable between two configurations corresponding to the first and second states of the limit switch, wherein the drive system is operably coupled to the limit switch to actuate the trigger mechanism based on a position of the component of the end effector. 10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the drive system comprises a gear, the motor operably coupled to impart rotary motion to the gear, the gear comprising one or more elevated or recessed portions that rotate about an axis of the gear as the gear rotates and actuate the trigger mechanism. 11. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the component of the end effector comprises a cutting blade moveable in translation along a lengthwise direction of the end effector. 12. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the end effector comprises a pair of jaw members. 13. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising a drive component operably coupling the transmission mechanism to the component of the end effector, the drive component being moveable in translation, and the motor operably coupled to the drive component. 14. The system according to claim 13 , wherein: the end effector comprises a pair of jaw members, at least one jaw member of the pair of jaw members comprising a groove, and the component of the end effector is moveable in translation along the groove. 15. The system according to claim 14 , wherein: the component of the end effector is moveable in translation along a length of the pair of jaw members between a distal-most position and a proximal-most position, the proximal-most position of the component of the end effector being proximal to the pair of jaw members. 16. The system according to claim 13 , wherein the transmission mechanism further comprises a gear operably coupled with the drive component, the motor being operably coupled to impart rotary motion to the gear to translate the drive component. 17. The system according to claim 13 , wherein the drive component is a cable. 18. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the motor is actuated in response to manipulation of the input devices at the surgeon console. 19. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the motor is a direct current motor. 20. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the control console is configured to supply the electrical signals to control the motor based on the position information output by the limit switch.
