A method for making an expanded, and optionally multi-component and/or colored PTFE monofilament is disclosed. The method includes forming a first paste by mixing a PTFE powder with a hydrocarbon solvent; forming an extrusion preform by pressing the first paste into a form; curing the extrusion preform by exposing the extrusion preform to a first temperature for a first time duration; forming a green monofilament by extruding the first paste through a die; expanding the green monofilament by exposing the green monofilament to a second temperature for a second time duration, the second time duration occurring after the first time duration; stretching the green monofilament substantially along a longitudinal axis of the green monofilament, the stretching the green monofilament occurring after the expanding the green monofilament; and sintering the green monofilament after the stretching the green monofilament.

We claim: 1. A monofilament comprising: a plurality of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) materials including a first PTFE material in contact with a second PTFE material along a first longitudinal interface of the monofilament, and a third PTFE material in contact with the second PTFE material along a second longitudinal interface of the monofilament, the first PTFE material having a first color and defining a first outer surface of the monofilament, the second PTFE material having a second color and defining a second outer surface of the monofilament, the third PTFE material having a third color and defining a third outer surface of the monofilament, the first color being different from the second color, and the third color being different from the first color and the second color. 2. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the monofilament has a tensile strength not less than about 690 MPa and a density between about 0.8 g/cc and about 1.5 g/cc. 3. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the third PTFE material is in contact with the first PTFE material along a third longitudinal interface of the monofilament. 4. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the monofilament has a tensile strength not less than about 690 MPa and a density between about 0.8 g/cc and about 1.5 g/cc. 5. The monofilament of claim 1 , further comprising a fourth PTFE material in contact with the third PTFE material along a third longitudinal interface of the monofilament, the fourth PTFE material having a fourth color and defining a fourth outer surface of the monofilament, the fourth color being different from the first color, the second color, and the third color. 6. The monofilament of claim 5 , wherein the fourth PTFE material is in contact with the first PTFE material along a fourth longitudinal interface of the monofilament. 7. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first longitudinal interface of the monofilament extends from the first outer surface of the monofilament to a radial depth not less than one-fourth of a cross sectional dimension of the monofilament. 8. The monofilament of claim 7 , wherein the first longitudinal interface of the monofilament extends from the first outer surface of the monofilament to about a longitudinal axis of the monofilament. 9. The monofilament of claim 8 , wherein the first longitudinal interface of the monofilament extends from the first outer surface of the monofilament to a radial depth of about one-half of the cross sectional dimension of the monofilament. 10. The monofilament of claim 9 , wherein the first longitudinal interface of the monofilament extends across an entire cross section of the monofilament in a radial direction. 11. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first longitudinal interface of the monofilament extends across an entire cross section of the monofilament in a radial direction. 12. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first longitudinal interface is helical. 13. The monofilament of claim 12 , wherein the first longitudinal interface has a first pitch and a second pitch, and the first and second pitches are different. 14. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein a radial thickness of the first PTFE is less than half of an overall diameter of the monofilament. 15. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first PTFE material forms a first radial sector of the monofilament, the second PTFE material forms a second radial sector of the monofilament, and the first and second radial sectors are different. 16. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first PTFE material forms a first radial sector of the monofilament of less than 180 degrees. 17. The monofilament of claim 1 , wherein the first and second PTFE materials are different in a molecular weight, a polymeric composition, or a bioactivity.
