Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Fastener embodiments of the invention comprise a freely translatable collet body, which at least partially translates within an auxiliary structure, and further comprise a captive threaded screw for rotationally engaging with the collet body to transform rotational movement into translational movement through substantial arresting of collet body rotation by way of an anti-rotation means. The screw comprises a free-spin feature that functionally, but not physically, decouples a drive tool from the collet body.

The invention claimed is: 1. A fastener, comprising: a housing; a proximal orifice positioned within the housing adjacent to a proximal end of the housing; and an axially aligned bore positioned within the housing, where the axially aligned bore includes a first anti-rotation section having a non-circular cross section; a collet body including: a threaded portion; a second anti-rotation section mating with the first anti-rotation section to prevent rotation between the collet body and the housing while allowing axial translation between the collet body and the housing, where the second anti-rotation section has a non-circular cross-section; and a plurality of radially displaceable fingers each having a work piece gripping element; a screw including: a threaded portion; a screw head with a drive tool interface receiving a rotary force imparted by a drive tool; and a reduced diameter portion axially positioned below the threaded portion of the screw; and a locking mechanism coupled to the housing and configured to retain the screw head in the housing; where, when the fastener is in a first configuration, the threaded portion of the screw rotationally engages with the threaded portion of the collet body to transform rotational movement thereof into axial translation of the collet body in relation to the housing and where the axial translation of the collet body causes a distal portion of the screw to radially expand the plurality of radially displaceable fingers; and where, when the fastener is in a second configuration, the reduced diameter portion is aligned with the threaded portion of the collet body and the screw freely spins within the collet body. 2. The fastener of claim 1 , where rotation of the screw in a first rotational direction transitions the collet body into the first configuration where the collet body is retracted into the housing and the plurality of radially displaceable fingers are radially expanded by the screw. 3. The fastener of claim 2 , where rotation of the screw in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction transitions the fastener into the second configuration. 4. The fastener of claim 1 , where the first anti-rotation section includes a plurality of planar surfaces mating with a plurality of planar surfaces in the second anti-rotation section. 5. The fastener of claim 1 , where the screw is captively retained in the housing. 6. The fastener of claim 5 , where the locking mechanism is a retaining ring positioned in the housing axially retaining a screw head flange of the screw positioned in the proximal orifice of the housing. 7. The fastener of claim 1 , where the housing includes a plurality of facets designed to interface with an external tool. 8. The fastener of claim 1 , where the plurality of radially displaceable fingers are contoured in thickness. 9. The fastener of claim 1 , where the distal portion of the screw is threaded. 10. The fastener of claim 1 , where the reduced diameter portion of the screw is not threaded. 11. A fastener, comprising: a housing including: an axially aligned bore positioned within an interior of the housing, where the axially aligned bore includes a first anti-rotation section having a non-circular cross section; a proximal orifice positioned within the housing adjacent to a proximal end of the housing; a collet body including: a threaded portion; a second anti-rotation section mating with the first anti-rotation section to prevent rotation between the collet body and the housing while allowing axial translation between the collet body and the housing, where the second anti-rotation section has a non-circular cross-section; and a plurality of radially displaceable fingers with a plurality of work piece gripping elements; a screw including: a threaded portion; a screw head flange positioned in the proximal orifice of the housing; and a reduced diameter portion axially positioned below the threaded portion of the screw; and a retaining ring positioned in the housing axially retaining the screw head flange of the screw positioned in the proximal orifice of the housing; where, when the fastener is in a first configuration, the threaded portion of the screw rotationally engages with the threaded portion of the collet body to transform rotational movement thereof into axial translation of the screw with respect to the collet body in an axial direction and where when the fastener is in a second configuration the reduced diameter portion is aligned with the threaded portion of the collet body and the screw freely spins within the collet body and the screw does not axially translate with respect to the collet body. 12. The fastener of claim 11 , where axial translation of the screw with regard to the collet body in the axial direction causes interaction between a distal portion of the screw and the plurality of radially displaceable fingers. 13. The fastener of claim 12 , where the distal portion is threaded. 14. The fastener of claim 11 , where the reduced diameter portion is unthreaded. 15. A single sided fastener, comprising: a housing including: an axially aligned bore positioned within an interior of the housing, where the axially aligned bore includes a first anti-rotation section having a non-circular cross section; a collet body including: a threaded portion; a second anti-rotation section mating with the first anti-rotation section to prevent rotation between the collet body and the housing while allowing axial translation between the collet body and the housing, where the second anti-rotation section has a non-circular cross-section; a plurality of radially displaceable fingers with a plurality of work piece gripping elements; a screw including: a threaded portion; a screw head with a drive tool interface receiving a rotary force imparted by a drive tool; and a reduced diameter portion axially positioned below the threaded portion of the screw; where when the single sided fastener is in a clamped configuration the threaded portion of the screw rotationally engages with the threaded portion of the collet body to transform rotational movement thereof into axial translation of the screw with respect to the collet body; and where, when the single sided fastener is in a free spin configuration, the reduced diameter portion is aligned with the threaded portion of the collet body and the screw freely spins within the collet body and the screw does not axially translate with respect to the collet body; and a retaining ring positioned in the housing axially retaining a screw head flange of the screw positioned in a proximal orifice of the housing. 16. The single sided fastener of claim 15 , where the housing includes a tool interface including a plurality of facets designed to receive an external tool and where the housing includes an exterior work piece contacting surface positioned below the tool interface. 17. The single sided fastener of claim 15 , where a distal portion of the screw is threaded and where the reduced diameter portion of the screw is not threaded.
