A fiber placement system including a fiber placement station at a first location, the fiber placement station including a tool and a fiber placement assembly configured to construct a reinforcement layup on the tool, the first fiber placement assembly including a compaction roller rotatable about an axis of rotation, the compaction roller at least partially defining a nip, a thermoplastic composite ply extending through the nip and a heating unit positioned to heat the thermoplastic composite ply proximate the nip, and a consolidation station at a consolidation location, the consolidation location being different from the first location, the consolidation station including a consolidation tool and a consolidation system configured to consolidate a reinforcement layup assembly that includes the reinforcement layup.

What is claimed is: 1. A fiber placement system comprising: a first fiber placement station at a first location, said first fiber placement station comprising: a first tool; and a first fiber placement assembly configured to construct a first reinforcement layup on said first tool; a consolidation station at a consolidation location, said consolidation location being different from said first location, said consolidation station comprising: a consolidation tool; and a consolidation system configured to consolidate a reinforcement layup assembly comprising said first reinforcement layup and at least one more reinforcement layup; and a transfer apparatus positioned to move said first reinforcement layup from said first tool to said consolidation tool. 2. The fiber placement system of claim 1 wherein said first fiber placement assembly comprises a compaction roller rotatable about an axis of rotation, said compaction roller at least partially defining a nip. 3. The fiber placement system of claim 2 wherein said first fiber placement assembly further comprises a thermoplastic composite ply extending through said nip. 4. The fiber placement system of claim 3 wherein said thermoplastic composite ply comprises at least one of polyether ether ketone, polyether ketone ketone, polyphenaline sulfide, polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. 5. The fiber placement system of claim 2 wherein said heating unit comprises a laser. 6. The fiber placement system of claim 1 wherein said transfer apparatus comprises a pick-and-place robot. 7. The fiber placement system of claim 2 further comprising a second fiber placement station at a second location, said second location being different from said first location and said consolidation location, said second fiber placement station comprising: a second tool; and a second fiber placement assembly configured to construct a second reinforcement layup on said second tool, said second fiber placement assembly comprising: a second compaction roller rotatable about a second axis of rotation, said second compaction roller at least partially defining a second nip; and a second heating unit positioned to supply heat proximate said second nip. 8. The fiber placement system of claim 7 wherein said second fiber placement assembly further comprises a second thermoplastic composite ply extending through said second nip. 9. The fiber placement system of claim 7 wherein said second heating unit comprises a laser. 10. The fiber placement system of claim 7 wherein said reinforcement layup assembly comprises said first reinforcement layup and said second reinforcement layup. 11. The fiber placement system of claim 7 further comprising a second transfer apparatus positioned to move said second reinforcement layup from said second tool to said consolidation tool. 12. The fiber placement system of claim 11 wherein said second transfer apparatus comprises a pick-and-place robot. 13. The fiber placement system of claim 1 wherein said consolidation system comprises a heating element. 14. The fiber placement system of claim 13 wherein said heating element is incorporated into said consolidation tool. 15. The fiber placement system of claim 13 wherein said heating element comprises an induction coil. 16. A fiber placement system comprising: a first fiber placement station at a first location, said first fiber placement station comprising: a first tool; and a first fiber placement assembly configured to construct a first reinforcement layup on said first tool, said first reinforcement layup comprising a thermoplastic matrix material, said first fiber placement assembly comprising: a first compaction roller rotatable about a first axis of rotation, said first compaction roller at least partially defining a first nip; and a first laser positioned to supply heat proximate said first nip; a second fiber placement station at a second location, said second fiber placement station comprising: a second tool; and a second fiber placement assembly configured to construct a second reinforcement layup on said second tool, said second reinforcement layup comprising a thermoplastic matrix material, said second fiber placement assembly comprising: a second compaction roller rotatable about a second axis of rotation, said second compaction roller at least partially defining a second nip; and a second laser positioned to supply heat proximate said second nip; a consolidation station at a consolidation location, said consolidation location being different from said first location and said second location, said consolidation station comprising: a consolidation tool; and a consolidation system configured to consolidate a reinforcement layup assembly comprising said first reinforcement layup and said second reinforcement layup; and a first transfer apparatus positioned to move said first reinforcement layup from said first tool to said consolidation tool. 17. The fiber placement system of claim 16 further comprising a second transfer apparatus positioned to move said second reinforcement layup from said second tool to said consolidation tool. 18. The fiber placement system of claim 16 wherein said consolidation system comprises a heating element incorporated into said consolidation tool, and wherein said heating element comprises an induction coil. 19. A fiber placement system comprising: a first fiber placement station at a first location, said first fiber placement station comprising: a first tool; a first fiber placement assembly configured to construct a first reinforcement layup on said first tool, said first fiber placement assembly comprising a compaction roller rotatable about an axis of rotation, said compaction roller at least partially defining a nip; a consolidation station at a consolidation location, said consolidation location being different from said first location, said consolidation station comprising: a consolidation tool; and a consolidation system configured to consolidate a reinforcement layup assembly comprising said first reinforcement layup and at least one more reinforcement layup; and a transfer apparatus positioned to move said first reinforcement layup from said first tool to said consolidation tool. 20. The fiber placement system of claim 19 , wherein the consolidation tool is a first consolidation tool, wherein the consolidation station further comprises a second consolidation tool opposed to the first consolidation tool, and wherein the first consolidation tool and second consolidation tool are configured to compress the first reinforcement layup and the at least one more reinforcement layup therebetween. 21. The fiber placement system of claim 2 wherein said first fiber placement assembly further comprises a heating unit positioned to supply heat proximate said nip.
