Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A container may include a neck including an external surface and at least one handle retention feature with axially lower and upper handle retention surfaces. A handle for a container may include a collar including spaced apart container retention features having axially lower and upper container retention surfaces to cooperate with the corresponding handle retention feature of the container to prevent axial movement of the collar with respect to the container.

The invention claimed is: 1. A one-piece handle for a container, wherein the handle includes a frustoconical collar including a frustoconical wall including axially spaced apart container retention features that include a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart reliefs having axially lower and upper container retention surfaces that face one another and that are configured to retain therebetween a corresponding handle retention feature of a container to prevent axial movement of the collar with respect to the container. 2. The handle set forth in claim 1 wherein the reliefs include apertures through the collar or debossments in an inner surface of the collar. 3. A container that includes: a base; a body extending from the base; a shoulder extending from the body; and a frustoconical neck extending from the shoulder and including: an axial end surface, a radially outer surface, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart handle retention bosses spaced apart from the shoulder and having axially lower and upper handle retention surfaces that face axially away from one another. 4. The container set forth in claim 3 wherein the handle retention bosses include at least one of a parallelogram, a circle, or indicia. 5. A container that includes: a base; a body extending from the base; a shoulder extending from the body; and a frustoconical neck extending from the shoulder and including: an axial end surface, a radially outer surface, and a plurality of handle retention features spaced apart from the shoulder and having axially lower and upper handle retention surfaces that face one another, including axially spaced apart annular features that include the handle retention surfaces, and that are established by an annular depression in the radially outer surface of the neck. 6. An assembly, comprising: a container that includes: a base; a body extending from the base; a shoulder extending from the body; and a neck extending from the shoulder and including: an axial end surface, a radially outer surface, and a plurality of handle retention features spaced apart from the shoulder and having axially lower and upper handle retention surfaces that face one another, including axially spaced apart annular features that include the handle retention surfaces, and that are established by an annular depression in the radially outer surface of the neck, and a handle having a collar with container retention features that face away from one another, wherein the handle retention surfaces of the container are spaced apart across the annular depression of the container and trap the container retention features of the handle collar. 7. The assembly set forth in claim 6 , wherein the container further comprises a handle anti-rotation feature extending between the handle retention surfaces. 8. The assembly set forth in claim 7 , wherein the handle collar further includes a container anti-rotation feature between the container retention features to cooperate with the handle anti-rotation feature of the container. 9. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container having a neck including: an external surface, an annular depression in the external surface, a plurality of handle retention features including axially facing shoulders of the container neck that are spaced apart across the annular depression in the external surface of the container neck, and at least one anti-rotation feature extending between the handle retention features; and a handle having a collar externally surrounding the neck on the container, the collar having: a plurality of container retention features that engage and that are trapped by the handle retention features on the container neck to prevent axial movement of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container, and at least one corresponding anti-rotation feature extending between the container retention features and engaging the at least one anti-rotation feature of the container to prevent rotation of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container. 10. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container having a neck with an external surface and at least one external embossment on the external surface, and a handle that includes a circumferentially continuous one-piece annular collar received by interference fit over the neck, the collar including at least one aperture through the collar corresponding to and engaged with the at least one external embossment on the neck to prevent movement of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container. 11. The assembly set forth in claim 10 , wherein the interference fit is a shrink fit. 12. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container having a neck with an external surface and at least one external embossment on the external surface, and a handle that includes circumferentially continuous one-piece annular collar received by interference fit over the neck, the collar including at least one internal relief corresponding to and engaged with the at least one external embossment on the neck to prevent movement of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container, wherein the interference fit is a snap fit. 13. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container having a frustoconical neck with an external surface and at least one external embossment on the external surface, and a handle that includes a circumferentially continuous one-piece annular collar received by interference fit over the neck, the collar including at least one internal relief corresponding to and engaged with the at least one external embossment on the neck to prevent movement of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container, wherein the at least one relief includes at least one aperture through the collar or at least one debossment in an inner surface of the collar. 14. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container having a neck with an external surface and at least one external embossment on the external surface, and a handle that includes a circumferentially continuous one-piece annular collar received by interference fit over the neck, the collar including at least one internal relief corresponding to and engaged with the at least one external embossment on the neck to prevent movement of the collar and the handle with respect to the neck and the container, wherein the container also has a shoulder and the neck includes an axial end surface, a radially outwardly facing external surface, and a radially outer annular flange radially extending from the external surface, and wherein the collar externally surrounds the neck on the container and extends over a portion of the shoulder of the container, and includes lower and upper axial ends between, and in axial contact with, the annular flange and the shoulder of the container, such that the collar is trapped between the annular flange and the shoulder. 15. A handle and container assembly that includes: a container including: a base, a body extending in a direction away from the base, a shoulder extending radially and axially from the body, and a neck extending in a direction generally axially from the shoulder and including an axial end surface, a radially outwardly facing external surface, and a radially outer annular flange radially extending from the external surface; and a handle having a collar externally surrounding the neck on the container and extending over a portion of the shoulder of the container, and including lower and
