Exemplary coating devices and exemplary coating methods for coating components with a coating agent, e.g., for painting motor vehicle body components with a paint, are disclosed. An exemplary coating device comprises an application device that applies the coating agent. The application device may include a paint head that discharges the coating agent out of at least one coating agent nozzle.

The invention claimed is: 1. A coating device for coating a component having a component surface having a predetermined course and guide path for coating agent, comprising: a multiple axis robot having a moveable end; an application device attached to the moveable end of the multiple axis robot, the application device being adapted to apply coating agent, the application device including a print head having a plurality of coating agent nozzles, the plurality of coating agent nozzles being adapted to discharge coating agent, the plurality of coating agent nozzles being arranged in a plurality of rows, the application device further including a sensor attached to the print head, the sensor being adapted to detect a spatial position of the print head as a function of the predetermined course and guide path for coating agent; and a robot controller communicatively coupled to the sensor and the multiple axis robot, the robot controller adapted to receive position data from the sensor and to transmit movement data to the multiple axis robot, the position data including the spatial position of the print head as a function of the predetermined course and guide path of applied coating agent, wherein the robot controller is adapted to determine a current course and guide path for the print head corresponding to the predetermined course and guide path as a function of the position data, and the robot controller is adapted to command the multiple axis robot to position the print head on the current course and guide path for the print head. 2. The coating device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is an optical sensor. 3. The coating device of claim 1 , wherein the robot controller is adapted to determine the current course and guide path for the print head in further correspondence to a previous course and guide path of a previously applied coating. 4. The coating device of claim 3 , wherein the print head is adapted to apply one of a UV responsive colour and an IR responsive colour.
