Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Apparatus for generating a supply of air at positive pressure for the amelioration or treatment of a respiratory disorder includes a first chamber, a second chamber, at least one inlet tube structured and configured to allow ambient air to enter the first chamber, at least one flow tube structured and configured to allow air to pass from the first chamber to the second chamber, and a blower structured and configured to produce a flow of air at positive pressure. The blower is positioned in the first chamber and structured and configured to receive air from the second chamber. The blower includes a housing structured and configured to sealingly separate air flow through an interior of the housing from the first chamber. The at least one inlet tube is axially spaced from the at least one flow tube.

The invention claimed is: 1. Apparatus for generating a supply of air at positive pressure for the amelioration or treatment of a respiratory disorder, comprising: a first chamber; a second chamber; a plurality of inlet tubes structured and configured to allow ambient air to enter the first chamber; a plurality of flow tubes structured and configured to allow air to pass from the first chamber to the second chamber; and a blower structured and configured to produce a flow of air at positive pressure, wherein the blower is positioned in the first chamber and structured and configured to receive air from the second chamber, wherein the blower includes a housing structured and configured to sealingly separate air flow through an interior of the housing from the first chamber, wherein the plurality of inlet tubes are axially spaced apart from the plurality of flow tubes, and wherein a central axis of the plurality of inlet tubes is parallel to but not co-axial with a central axis of the plurality of flow tubes. 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a plurality of housing portions connected to one another to form a substantially sealed structure. 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a flow rate sensor structured and configured to measure a first pressure in the first chamber and a second pressure in the second chamber to determine an air flow rate. 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of inlet tubes is arranged adjacent to another of the plurality of inlet tubes such that the adjacent inlet tubes include at least one common side wall. 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of inlet tubes include axes that are arranged substantially parallel to axes of the plurality of flow tubes, and wherein one or more of the plurality of inlet tubes includes an axis that is not coaxial with an axis of one or more of the plurality of flow tubes. 6. Apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the blower includes an axis that is substantially parallel with the axes of the plurality of inlet tubes and the axes of the plurality of flow tubes. 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a plate assembly including a base plate, the plurality of inlet tubes, and a blower suspension to support the blower. 8. Apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the plate assembly is a first plate assembly and the apparatus further comprises a second plate assembly including a base plate, the plurality of flow tubes, and a blower suspension to support the blower. 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the blower suspension of the first plate assembly is an outlet end suspension to support the blower adjacent a blower outlet of the blower and the blower suspension of the second plate assembly is an inlet end suspension to support the blower adjacent a blower inlet of the blower. 10. Apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the base plate of the first plate assembly defines a wall of the first chamber and the base plate of the second plate assembly defines a wall of the first and second chambers. 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising a sealing lip along a perimeter of the base plate of the first plate assembly structured and configured to provide a seal along an edge of the first chamber. 12. Apparatus according to claim 10 , further comprising a sealing lip along a perimeter of the base plate of the second plate assembly structured and configured to provide a seal along an edge of the first and second chambers. 13. Apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the base plate of the first plate assembly comprises a first part constructed of a relatively rigid material and the blower suspension of the first plate assembly comprises a second part constructed of a relatively soft material provided to the first part. 14. Apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the base plate of the second plate assembly comprises a first part constructed of a relatively rigid material and the blower suspension of the second plate assembly comprises a second part constructed of a relatively soft material provided to the first part. 15. Apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the blower suspension includes a gusset portion structured and configured to allow flexibility and relative movement to isolate vibrations of the blower and provide shock resistance. 16. Apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising: a printed circuit board positioned exterior the first chamber; and a connector structured and configured to electrically connect the blower and the printed circuit board, wherein the connector is arranged to pass through the first chamber while not being positioned directly in an air flow path of the first chamber. 17. Apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein the connector is arranged to pass around a periphery of at least one of the plurality of inlet tubes. 18. Apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the connector includes a flexible circuit board, flexible printed circuit or a flexible flat cable. 19. System for treating a respiratory disorder, comprising: a patient interface structured and configured to form a seal with a patient's face; the apparatus according to claim 1 ; and an air circuit to connect the patient interface and the apparatus. 20. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of inlet tubes forms an inlet tube array including an outer perimeter with a non-circular shape. 21. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the second chamber is peripheral to the first chamber such that the second chamber is outside or external to a periphery of the first chamber. 22. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of inlet tubes are arranged in parallel, and the plurality of flow tubes are arranged in parallel.
