Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A refining member for a pulp refiner comprising a refining body with a refining surface comprising refiner bars separated by refiner grooves and teeth. Each of the refiner bars extend from a radially inward position on the refining surface to a first radially outward position on the refining surface, and the teeth extend to a second radially outward position on the refining surface. The second radially outward position is nearer to an outermost part of the refining body than the first radially outward position. The refiner bars are adapted to refine wood fibers, and the teeth are adapted to break up fiber bundles.

What is claimed is: 1. A refining member for a pulp refiner, the refining member comprising: a refining body including a refining surface comprising: refiner bars separated by refiner grooves, each of the refiner bars extending from a radially inward position on the refining surface to a first radially outward position on the refining surface and having a first height extending upward from a floor of an adjacent refiner groove, wherein a refining zone of the refining body is defined between the radially inward position and the first radially outward position of the refiner bars and wherein each refiner groove extends continuously between the radially inward position and the first radially outward position of adjacent ones of the refiner bars; and teeth extending to a second radially outward position on the refining surface and having a second height extending upward from a floor of an adjacent refiner groove, the second height of the teeth being greater than the first height of the refiner bars, wherein the teeth are located between radially outer edges of the refiner bars and a radially outer edge of the refining body; and wherein the refiner bars are adapted to refine wood fibers and the teeth are adapted to break up fiber bundles. 2. The refining member of claim 1 , wherein the refiner bars have a first maximum height, when measured from a floor of an adjacent refiner groove, of from about 4 mm to about 10 mm. 3. The refining member of claim 1 , wherein the refiner bars have a width extending between side edges of from about 2 mm to about 8 mm. 4. The refining member of claim 1 , wherein the teeth are radially spaced apart from radially outer edges of the refiner bars at the first radially outward position. 5. The refining member of claim 1 , wherein each refiner bar extends continuously from the radially inward position to the first radially outward position. 6. A pulp refiner comprising: a frame; at least a first pair of refining members comprising: a first refining member associated with the frame and comprising a first refining body including a first refining surface comprising: first refiner bars separated by first refiner grooves, each of the first refiner bars extending from a first radially inward position on the first refining surface to a first radially outward position on the first refining surface, and first teeth extending to a further radially outward position on the first refining surface, wherein the further radially outward position is nearer to an outermost part of the first refining body than the first radially outward position; a second refining member associated with the frame and comprising a second refining body including a second refining surface comprising: second refiner bars separated by second refiner grooves, each of the second refiner bars extending from a second radially inward position on the second refining surface to a second radially outward position on the second refining surface, and second teeth, wherein when the first refining member is positioned opposite the second refining member: each first refiner bar is positioned opposite a corresponding second refiner bar along substantially an entirety of a respective longitudinal length of the first and second refiner bars; the first teeth intermesh with the second teeth such that a portion of the first teeth overlap a portion of the second teeth in an axial direction; and the first refining member is spaced from the second refining member to define a refining space therebetween; and a rotor associated with the frame and coupled to one of the first refining member or the second refining member such that rotation of the rotor effects movement of the first and second refining members relative to one another; and wherein when a slurry of wood pulp comprising wood fibers is supplied to the frame, the wood pulp slurry passes through the refining space such that a significant number of the wood fibers in the wood pulp slurry are refined and a plurality of wood fiber bundles in the wood pulp slurry are separated. 7. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein the second teeth extend to a third radially outward position on the second refining surface, the third radially outward position being nearer to an outermost part of the second refining body than the second radially outward position. 8. The pulp refiner of claim 7 , wherein the second refining surface comprises a first row of the second teeth extending to the third radially outward position on the second refining surface and a second row of the second teeth extending to a fourth radially outward position on the second refining surface. 9. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein the first refining member is a non-rotating stator member and the second refining member is a rotating rotor member. 10. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein a first gap is defined between outer surfaces of the first and second refiner bars and a second gap is defined between outer surfaces of the first and second teeth and respective adjacent portions of the first and second refining surfaces, the second gap being greater than the first gap. 11. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein the first teeth are spaced apart from radially outer edges of the first refiner bars by a first substantially planar area and from a radially outer edge of the first refining body by a second substantially planar area. 12. The pulp refiner of claim 11 , wherein the second teeth comprise: a first row that is spaced apart from radially outer edges of the second refiner bars by a third substantially planar area; and a second row that is spaced apart from the first row by a fourth substantially planar area. 13. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein: each first refiner groove extends continuously between the first radially inward and first radially outward positions of adjacent ones of the first refiner bars; and each second refiner groove extends continuously between the second radially inward and second radially outward positions of adjacent ones of the second refiner bars. 14. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein: each of the first refiner bars extend continuously from the first radially inward position to the first radially outward position; and each of the second refiner bars extend continuously from the second radially inward position to the second radially outward position. 15. The pulp refiner of claim 6 , wherein: the first radially inward position of each first refiner bar on the first refining surface substantially corresponds to the second radially inward position of the corresponding second refiner bar on the second refining surface; and the first radially outward position of each first refiner bar on the first refining surface substantially corresponds to the second radially outward position of the corresponding second refiner bar on the second refining surface. 16. A refining member for a pulp refiner, the refining member comprising: a refining body including a refining surface comprising: refiner bars separated by refiner grooves, each of the refiner bars extending continuously from a radially inward position on the refining surface to a first radially outward position on the refining surface, wherein a refining zone of the refining body is defined between the radially inward position and the first radially outward position of the refiner bars; and teeth extending to a second radially outward position on the refining surface, wherein the teeth are located between radially outer edges of the refiner bars and a radially outer edge of the refining body, wherein the refiner bars are
