Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An inflatable web is disclosed. The web includes a first film and second film ply sealed together via a plurality of generally transverse seals. The transverse seals define first and second inflatable chambers. The inflatable chambers are inflatable with, and contain, a fluid. The web defines a separation region extending at least partially between the first and second inflatable chambers in a substantially transverse direction across the web and configured to facilitate separation of the first and second inflatable chambers. The separation region includes a tear initiation feature that facilitates tearing of the web to separate the first and second inflatable chambers. The separation region includes a tear propagation line at least partially longitudinally offset from the tear initiation feature, and close enough to the tear initiation feature that force imparted to the web via the tear initiation feature will tear of the web through the tear propagation line.

What is claimed is: 1. An inflatable web, comprising: a first film ply; and a second film ply sealed to the first ply via a plurality of generally transverse seals to define a first and second inflatable chambers therebetween and an inflation region, the chambers being inflatable with a fluid and operable to contain the fluid, the sealed plies having a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge, wherein the web defines a separation region extending at least partially transversally across the web between the first inflatable chamber and the inflatable second chamber, the separation region being configured to facilitate separation of the first and second inflatable chambers, wherein the separation region includes: a tear propagation line extending transversally across at least a portion of the web with an end of the tear propagation line terminating proximal to the first longitudinal edge of the web or the inflation region, and a tear initiation feature at least partially longitudinally offset from the tear propagation line, and close enough to the tear propagation line that a force imparted to the web via the tear initiation feature will facilitate the initiation of a tear of the web such that the tear propagates to an end of the tear propagation line and allowing for the tearing of the web to separate the first inflatable chamber from the second inflatable chamber propagation line initiation feature initiation feature initiation feature propagation line. 2. The web of claim 1 , wherein the tear propagation line includes a first line of weakness extending transversely across a portion of the web. 3. The web of claim 2 , wherein the tear initiation feature is configured to facilitate the engagement between a user and the web for tearing. 4. The web of claim 3 , wherein the tear initiation feature is suitable for a user to grasp the web by extending one or a hand, finger, or tool, through the web. 5. The web of claim 3 , wherein the tear propagation line extends from a first longitudinal edge of the film to a second longitudinal edge of the film. 6. The web of claim 5 , wherein the tear initiation feature includes a second line of weakness extending transversely across a smaller portion of the web than the tear propagation line. 7. The web of claim 6 , wherein the first line of weakness includes a line of perforations through at least one of the first ply or second ply. 8. The web of claim 7 , wherein the second line of weakness includes a line of perforations through at least one of the first ply or second ply. 9. The web of claim 8 , wherein the perforations of the second line of weakness are transversely longer than the perforations of the first line of weakness. 10. The web of claim 6 , wherein the second line of weakness is transversely offset from both the first and second longitudinal edges. 11. The web of claim 10 , wherein the second line of weakness is in a generally central position relative to the transverse width of the web. 12. The web of claim 5 , wherein the tear propagation line and the tear initiation line are sufficiently close that a tear initiated in the tear initiation feature propagates to the tear propagation region. 13. The web of claim 1 , wherein the tear propagation line is a first tear propagation line and the separation region further comprises a second tear propagation line extending transversely across a portion of the web. 14. The web of claim 13 , wherein the first tear propagation line and the second tear propagation line are longitudinally offset from one another. 15. The web of claim 13 , wherein the first tear propagation line and the second tear propagation line are longitudinally offset from the tear initiation feature. 16. The web of claim 15 , wherein the first tear propagation line and the second tear propagation line are co-linear. 17. The web of claim 16 , wherein the tear initiation feature is located transversely between the first tear propagation line and the second tear propagation line. 18. The web of claim 17 , wherein the first tear propagation line, the second tear propagation line and the tear initiation feature include first, second and third lines of weakness defined by perforations, and the tear initiation feature is formed of perforations that are transversely longer than perforations forming the first tear propagation line and the second tear propagation line. 19. The web of claim 1 , wherein the tear initiation feature including a secondary opening that initiates tearing of the web to separate the first inflatable chamber from the second inflatable chamber, and a longitudinal appendage extending from the secondary opening longitudinally toward the tear propagation line and terminating close enough to the tear propagation line that a force imparted to the web via the tear initiation feature will cause tearing of the web through the appendage to the tear propagation line. 20. The web of claim 1 , wherein the tear initiation feature includes a line of weakness and a tear connecting feature extending transversely across a portion of the web, wherein the tear connecting feature is disposed between the line of weakness and the tear propagation region and such that a force imparted to the web via the tear initiation feature will cause tearing of the web through the tear connecting feature to the tear propagation region. 21. An inflatable web, comprising: a first film ply; and a second film ply sealed to the first ply via a plurality of generally transverse seals to define a first and second inflatable chambers therebetween, which chambers are inflatable with a fluid and operable to contain the fluid; wherein the web defines a separation region extending at least partially transversally across the web between the first inflatable chamber and the inflatable second chamber, the separation region being configured to facilitate separation of the first and second inflatable chambers; wherein the separation region includes: a tear initiation feature including a secondary opening that initiates tearing of the web to separate the first inflatable chamber from the second inflatable chamber, and a tear propagation line offset from the tear initiation feature, wherein a longitudinal appendage extends from the secondary opening longitudinally toward the tear initiation feature close enough to the tear initiation feature that a force imparted to the web via the tear initiation feature will cause tearing of the web through the appendage to the tear propagation line. 22. An inflatable web, comprising: a first film ply; and a second film ply sealed to the first ply via a plurality of generally transverse seals to define a first and second inflatable chambers therebetween, which chambers are inflatable with a fluid and operable to contain the fluid, wherein the web defines a separation region extending at least partially transversally across the web between the first inflatable chamber and the inflatable second chamber, the separation region being configured to facilitate separation of the first and second inflatable chambers, wherein the separation region includes: a tear initiation feature that facilitates tearing of the web to separate the first inflatable chamber from the second inflatable chamber, wherein the tear initiation feature includes a line of weakness and a tear connecting feature extending transversely across a portion of the web, and a tear propagation line at least partially longitudinally offset from the t
