Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hand held spectrometer is used to illuminate the object and measure the one or more spectra. The spectral data of the object can be used to determine one or more attributes of the object. In many embodiments, the spectrometer is coupled to a database of spectral information that can be used to determine the attributes of the object. The spectrometer system may comprise a hand held communication device coupled to a spectrometer, in which the user can input and receive data related to the measured object with the hand held communication device. The embodiments disclosed herein allow many users to share object data with many people, in order to provide many people with actionable intelligence in response to spectral data.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for early detection of developing urinary tract bacterial infection, the system comprising: one or more spectrometers attached to a catheter drain tube; at least two blockers, wherein said at least two blockers comprise actuators to compress the tube to prevent urine flow in said tube, wherein the at least two blockers further comprise an illumination unit. 2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more processors configured with instructions to receive spectral data from the one or more spectrometers and compare a database of spectral data to the spectral data in order to identify evaluation of an infection. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination unit is facing the one or more spectrometers, on an opposite side of the catheter drain tube. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least two blockers further comprise a lower blocker, a mid blocker, and an upper blocker. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the mid blocker comprises the illumination unit. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the spectrometer is configured to operate in two or more operational modes comprising a transmission mode and a reflectance mode. 7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a reflector coupled to the catheter drain tube. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the reflector is facing the one or more spectrometers, on an opposite side of the catheter drain tube. 9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more spectrometers comprise a second illumination unit. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more spectrometers are coupled to a moving mechanical actuator configured to position the one or more spectrometers at a plurality of different locations. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the moving mechanical actuator is further configured to move the one or more spectrometers between at least a first position to configure the spectrometer to operate in a transmission mode and a second position to configure the spectrometer to operate in a reflectance mode. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more spectrometers comprise two or more spectrometers located at different positions. 13. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more processors for receiving spectra from the one or more spectrometers. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to analyze spectra over time to detect biofilm evolution gradients and predict infection development. 15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more processors configured with an alert threshold setting, wherein the alert threshold setting depends on received spectral data from the one or more spectrometers. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to alert a medical staff if the received spectral data approaches the alert threshold setting. 17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more spectrometers are attached to an exterior of the catheter drain tube to deliver light through the catheter drain tube and illuminate urine passing through the catheter drain tube. 18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the light is delivered through the catheter drain tube and the urine passing through the catheter drain tube to be received by the one or more spectrometers. 19. A method for early detection of developing urinary tract bacterial infection, the method comprising: arranging one or more spectrometers proximate to a catheter drain tube positioned to receive urine from a patient; opening at least one of at least two blockers, wherein said at least two blockers comprise actuators to compress the tube to prevent urine flow in the catheter drain tube, wherein the at least two blockers further comprise an illumination unit; and using only spectrographic information provided by the one or more spectrometers, analyzing the urine passing through the catheter drain tube from the patient to determine a presence of bacterial infection in the patient.
