Official abstract text for this publication.
A seed meter disk includes a body defining a plane of rotation. A circumferential array of seed openings are provided for seed adherence. A circumferential array of seed agitator pockets are formed as depressions in the first side of the body, each one of the array of seed agitator pockets having a radially inner end, a radially outer end, and a trailing edge extending from the radially inner end to the radially outer end. At least a portion of the trailing edge of one or more of the seed agitator pockets is backswept so that a circumferential-direction offset from a radial reference line rotationally ahead of the trailing edge, with respect to rotation of the seed meter disk in an operational direction, increases toward the radially outer end. The backswept portion is non-linear.

What is claimed is: 1. A seed meter disk to be rotationally supported in an agricultural seed meter for metering seeds output to a soil furrow by a planter or air seeder, the seed meter disk comprising: a body defining a plane in which the seed meter disk rotates about a central axis perpendicular to the plane; a circumferential array of seed openings to which seeds from a seed pool adhere in the presence of a pressure differential between a first side of the body on a first side of the plane and a second side of the body on a second side of the plane; and a circumferential array of seed agitator pockets formed as depressions in the first side of the body, each one of the array of seed agitator pockets having a radially inner end, a radially outer end, and a trailing edge extending from the radially inner end to the radially outer end, wherein at least a portion of the trailing edge of one or more of the seed agitator pockets among the array of seed agitator pockets is backswept so that a circumferential-direction offset from a radial reference line rotationally ahead of the trailing edge, with respect to rotation of the seed meter disk in an operational direction, increases toward the radially outer end, wherein the backswept portion is non-linear, and wherein the non-linear backswept portion forms the entirety of the trailing edge. 2. The seed meter disk of claim 1 , wherein the body is formed integrally as a single piece. 3. The seed meter disk of claim 1 , wherein the array of seed agitator pockets is spaced radially from the array of seed openings. 4. The seed meter disk of claim 3 , wherein the array of seed agitator pockets is spaced completely radially inward toward the central axis from the array of seed openings. 5. The seed meter disk of claim 1 , wherein the array of seed agitator pockets is formed by a plurality of seed agitator pockets, each having an identical geometry. 6. The seed meter disk of claim 1 , wherein the array of seed agitator pockets is a ring-shaped array consisting of a plurality of seed agitator pockets, all of which are positioned at a common radial offset from the central axis. 7. The seed meter disk of claim 1 , wherein the backswept portion is curvilinear. 8. The seed meter disk of claim 7 , wherein the curvilinear backswept portion forms the entirety of the trailing edge. 9. A seed meter disk to be rotationally supported in an agricultural seed meter for metering seeds output to a soil furrow by a planter or air seeder, the seed meter disk comprising: a body defining a plane in which the seed meter disk rotates about a central axis perpendicular to the plane; a circumferential array of seed openings to which seeds from a seed pool adhere in the presence of a pressure differential between a first side of the body on a first side of the plane and a second side of the body on a second side of the plane; and a circumferential array of seed agitators provided on the first side of the meter disk, each one of the array of seed agitators having a forward-facing surface with respect to rotation of the seed meter disk in an operational direction, wherein the forward-facing surface of some or all of the seed agitators are wholly non-linear from end-to-end and backswept so that a circumferential-direction offset from a radial reference line rotationally ahead of the forward-facing surface increases along the forward-facing surface in a radially outward direction. 10. The seed meter of claim 9 , wherein the seed agitators of the circumferential array of seed agitators are seed agitator pockets formed as depressions in the first side of the meter disk, and wherein each corresponding forward-facing surface forms at least part of a trailing edge of the seed agitator pocket. 11. The seed meter disk of claim 9 , wherein the array of seed agitators is spaced radially from the array of seed openings. 12. The seed meter disk of claim 11 , wherein the array of seed agitators is spaced completely radially inward toward the central axis from the array of seed openings. 13. The seed meter disk of claim 9 , wherein the array of seed agitators is formed by a plurality of seed agitators, each having an identical geometry. 14. The seed meter disk of claim 9 , wherein the array of seed agitators is a ring-shaped array consisting of a plurality of seed agitators, all of which are positioned at a common radial offset from the central axis. 15. The seed meter disk of claim 9 , wherein the non-linear, backswept forward-facing surface is curvilinear. 16. The seed meter disk of claim 15 , wherein the non-linear, backswept forward-facing surface is curvilinear throughout, from a first end to a second end. 17. A seed meter for metering seeds output to a soil furrow by a planter or air seeder, the seed meter comprising: a housing having a seed inlet to receive a supply of seeds; a seed meter disk supported for rotation within the housing, the seed meter disk separating a first chamber of the housing in communication with the seed inlet from a second chamber of the housing, the seed meter adapted to maintain a quantity of seeds defining a seed pool in the first chamber, and the seed meter further adapted to maintain a higher pressure in the first chamber than in the second chamber; a drive unit operable to drive rotation of the seed meter disk in a predefined direction; a circumferential array of seed openings extending through the seed meter disk to couple the first and second chambers; and a circumferential array of seed agitators provided on a side of the seed meter disk facing the first chamber, each one of the array of seed agitators having a forward-facing surface with respect to the predefined direction of rotation, wherein the forward-facing surface of some or all of the seed agitators are wholly non-linear from end-to-end and backswept so that a circumferential-direction offset from a radial reference line rotationally ahead of the forward-facing surface increases along the forward-facing surface in a radially outward direction. 18.
