Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In one aspect of the present disclosure, a display system is disclosed, such as a wearable head-mounted display (HMD), that includes an internal system housing and a movable display stack. The display stack includes a display panel, a carrier supporting the display panel, and a heat sink that are secured together such that the display panel, the carrier, and the heat sink are movable in unison within the system housing to adjust focus of the display panel. The carrier and/or the heat sink respectively include first and second thermal solutions to facilitate heat transfer away from the display panel, which may include a material having high thermal-conductivity properties and/or any structure that is configured to increase the exposed surface area of the carrier and/or the heat sink, such as projections or extensions (e.g., fins), recesses, slits, openings, or the like.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A wearable head-mounted display (HMD), comprising: an internal system housing defining an interior space; a display stack positioned within the interior space, the display stack including: a single display panel with opposed first and second sides; a carrier supporting the first side of the display panel, the carrier including a first thermal solution to facilitate heat transfer away from the display panel; and a heat sink secured to the second side of the display panel, the heat sink including a second thermal solution to facilitate heat transfer away from the display panel; and a guide system including: a first guide rail coupled to the system housing; and a second guide rail coupled to the carrier or the heat sink, the second guide rail engageable with the first guide rail such that the display panel, the carrier, and the heat sink are movable in unison within the system to adjust focus of the display panel and generate airflow across the first and second thermal solutions. 2. The HMD of claim 1 , further including an actuator in mechanical cooperation with the display stack to reposition the display stack within the guide system housing. 3. The HMD of claim 2 , wherein the actuator is secured to the system housing. 4. The HMD of claim 3 , wherein the actuator is mechanically connected to the carrier. 5. The HMD of claim 3 , wherein the actuator is mechanically connected to the heat sink. 6. The HMD of claim 3 , wherein the display stack is mechanically connected to the system housing to support the display stack during movement within the system housing. 7. The HMD of claim 6 , wherein the display stack and the system housing include corresponding guide members to facilitate movement of the display stack in relation to the system housing. 8. The HMD of claim 7 , wherein the guide members included on the system housing and the display stack are configured for relative linear movement. 9. The HMD of claim 1 , wherein the first and second thermal solutions include discontinuities defined within or extending from exposed surfaces of the carrier and the heat sink, respectively, the discontinuities increasing an exposed surface area of the carrier and the heat sink. 10. The HMD of claim 9 , wherein the discontinuities include extensions depending outwardly from the exposed surfaces of the carrier and the heat sink. 11. The HMD of claim 9 , wherein the discontinuities include recesses extending inwardly into the exposed surfaces of the carrier and the heat sink. 12. The HMD of claim 9 , wherein the discontinuities include recesses extending inwardly into the exposed surface of the carrier and extensions depending outwardly from the exposed surface of the heat sink. 13. A wearable display system, comprising: a housing including a first guide member; and a display stack including a second guide member engageable with the first guide member such that the display stack is movable in relation to the housing, the display stack including: a single display panel including opposing first and second sides; a chassis supporting the first side of the display panel, the chassis including a metallic material and discontinuities defined within and/or extending from an exposed surface of the chassis to increase exposed surface area and heat dissipation in the chassis; and a thermal conductor secured to the second side of the display panel, the thermal conductor including discontinuities defined within and/or extending from an exposed surface of the thermal conductor to increase exposed surface area and heat dissipation in the thermal conductor; and an actuator in mechanical cooperation with the display stack to reposition the display stack in relation to the housing. 14. The wearable display system of claim 13 , wherein the actuator is coupled to one side of the chassis and the second gude member is coupled to an opposing side of the chassis. 15. The wearable display system of claim 13 , wherein the actuator is coupled to the thermal conductor and the second guide member is coupled to the chassis. 16. The wearable display system of claim 13 , wherein the first and second guide members are configured for relative linear movement such that the display stack is repositionable between a multitude of positions along a longitudinal axis of the wearable display system to adjust focus of the display panel and cause air circulation within the wearable display system to facilitate heat dissipation from the display panel. 17. The wearable display system of claim 13 , wherein the discontinuities are integrally formed with the chassis and the thermal conductor and include one or more extensions depending outwardly from the exposed surfaces of the chassis and the thermal conductor. 18. The wearable display system of claim 13 , wherein the thermal conductor is configured to support one or more electrical components of the wearable display system. 19. A method of reducing heat within a wearable display system, the method comprising: providing a movable display stack including a chassis supporting one side of a single display panel and a thermal conductor secured to an opposing side of the display panel, the chassis and/or the thermal conductor including extensions depending from exposed surfaces and/or one or more recesses extending inwardly into exposed surfaces to increase exposed surface area and heat dissipation in the movable display stack; and repositioning, using an actuator and guide members, the movable display stack within a housing of the wearable display system to intake air into and expel air from vents disposed in the system housing, wherein movement of air across the exposed surfaces of the chassis and/or the thermal conductor transfers heat away from the movable display stack. 20. The method of claim 19 , wherein repositioning the movable display stack includes back and forth translation of the display stack with respect to the housing to create a bellows effect of drawing cooler air into an interior of the housing through the vents and expelling warmer air from the interior of the housing through the vents.
