Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An extrusion die is provided with an adjustable end seal assembly. The extrusion die includes a die body, and the adjustable end seal assembly includes an end seal device and a wedge mechanism. The adjustable end seal assembly has an engaged configuration and a disengaged configuration. When in the engaged configuration, the adjustable end seal assembly is held forcibly against the die body. When in the disengaged configuration, the adjustable end seal assembly is either spaced apart from the die body or held against the die body with less force than when in the engaged configuration. Methods of operating such an extrusion die are also provided.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating an extrusion die including a die body with an end region, an internal flow passageway leading to an outlet orifice, and an adjustable end seal assembly having a wedge mechanism and an end seal device configured to close one side of said internal flow passageway, the method comprising: moving said adjustable end seal assembly in a first direction from a disengaged configuration to an engaged configuration, such that said end seal device is moved along the wedge mechanism in a direction perpendicular to the first direction, wherein when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said engaged configuration said end seal device is held forcibly against an end region of said die body, and when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said disengaged configuration said end seal device is either spaced apart from said end region of said die body or held against said end region of said die body with less force than when in said engaged configuration. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein when said end seal device is held forcibly against said end region of said die body, a pressure is applied in a direction perpendicular to the plane in which said end region lies. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said adjustable end seal assembly expands in moving from said disengaged configuration to said engaged configuration. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the extrusion die further includes a single actuator, and wherein moving said adjustable end seal assembly from the disengaged configuration to the engaged configuration comprises operating said single actuator of said adjustable end seal assembly. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein operating said single actuator of said adjustable end seal assembly comprises moving said adjustable end seal assembly in an axial direction parallel to the end region of said die body. 6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising operating said single actuator to cause said end seal device to simultaneously apply substantially uniform pressure to multiple points about said end region of said die body in said engaged configuration, thereby sealing a lateral side of said internal flow passageway. 7. The method of claim 4 , further comprising moving said adjustable end seal assembly from said engaged configuration to said disengaged configuration by operating said single actuator of said adjustable end seal assembly, such that said adjustable end seal assembly is then received loosely alongside said die body. 8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising removing said adjustable end seal assembly from said extrusion die by pulling said adjustable end seal assembly away from a rear side of said extrusion die. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said adjustable end seal assembly further comprises a gasket, and wherein said gasket is removable from said die body when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said disengaged configuration. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said gasket is positioned between said die body and said wedge mechanism. 11. The method of claim 4 , wherein the single actuator is a rotatable actuator, and wherein operating said single actuator of said adjustable end seal assembly comprises rotating the rotatable actuator in one direction to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the disengaged configuration to the engaged configuration. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising rotating the rotatable actuator in another direction, opposite the one direction, to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the engaged configuration to the disengaged configuration. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein rotating the rotatable actuator causes an adjustment rod of the adjustable end seal assembly to move axially. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adjustment rod moves axially toward or away from a front side of the die body. 15. The method of claim 4 , wherein the single actuator is a sliding actuator, and wherein operating said single actuator of said adjustable end seal assembly comprises sliding the sliding actuator in one direction to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the disengaged configuration to the engaged configuration. 16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising sliding the sliding actuator in another direction, opposite the one direction, to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the engaged configuration to the disengaged configuration. 17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating said extrusion die so that extrudate flows through said internal flow passageway and alongside said end seal device when said adjustable end seal assembly is in the engaged configuration. 18. A method of operating an extrusion die including a die body with an end region, an internal flow passageway leading to an outlet orifice, an adjustable end seal assembly having an end seal device configured to close one side of said internal flow passageway, and an actuator, the method comprising: operating the actuator to move said adjustable end seal assembly in an axial direction parallel to the end region of said die body, such that said end seal device is moved along a direction perpendicular to the axial direction, said adjustable end seal assembly being moved from a disengaged configuration to an engaged configuration, wherein when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said engaged configuration said end seal device is held forcibly against an end region of said die body, and when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said disengaged configuration said end seal device is either spaced apart from said end region of said die body or held against said end region of said die body with less force than when in said engaged configuration. 19. A method of operating an extrusion die including a die body with an end region, an internal flow passageway leading to an outlet orifice, an adjustable end seal assembly having an end seal device configured to close one side of said internal flow passageway, and a sliding actuator, the method comprising: sliding the sliding actuator in one direction to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the disengaged configuration to the engaged configuration, wherein when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said engaged configuration said end seal device is held forcibly against an end region of said die body, and when said adjustable end seal assembly is in said disengaged configuration said end seal device is either spaced apart from said end region of said die body or held against said end region of said die body with less force than when in said engaged configuration. 20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising sliding the sliding actuator in another direction, opposite the one direction, to move said adjustable end seal assembly from the engaged configuration to the disengaged configuration.
