Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Embodiments relate to systems, chambers, and methods for processing particles by washing, concentrating, and/or treating the particles. Some embodiments provide for the processing of cells that may be in a liquid medium (e.g., a liquid in which the cells were grown) and are processed by being washed and concentrated for later use in research or other therapies.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A chamber for separating particles from a liquid, the chamber comprising: a first side wall defining a first volume, wherein the first volume comprises a first cross-sectional area and a second cross-sectional area, the second cross-sectional area being smaller than the first cross-sectional area; a second side wall defining a second volume located above the first volume; a first port in fluid communication with the first volume, wherein the first port is located in the first side wall; a first wall adjacent the first port, the first wall, said first wall being curved and preventing flow of particles in liquid into the second volume, wherein the first wall at least partially defines a channel for flow of particles away from the second volume; a second port in fluid communication with the first volume, wherein the second port is located below the first port; and a third port in fluid communication with the second volume, wherein the third port is located above the second port. 2. The chamber of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the first side wall is angled with respect to a central axis. 3. The chamber of claim 2 , wherein the at least a portion of the first side wall defines a conical volume that makes up the first volume. 4. The chamber of claim 3 , wherein the first port is located near the first cross-sectional area. 5. The chamber of claim 3 , wherein the channel and first wall direct particles and liquid, introduced through the first port, toward an inside surface of the first side wall. 6. The chamber of claim 1 , further comprising a second wall located diametrically opposite the first wall. 7. The chamber of claim 6 , wherein the second wall is curved. 8. The chamber of claim 6 , wherein the second wall further defines the channel for flow of particles away from the second volume. 9. The chamber of claim 6 , wherein the first wall and the second wall are part of a continuous skirt. 10. The chamber of claim 9 , wherein the channel directs particles and liquid in a direction tangential to a portion of the first side wall. 11. The chamber of claim 10 , wherein the channel comprises a partial wall that aids in directing particles and liquid in a direction tangential to a portion of the first side wall. 12. The chamber of claim 9 , further comprising an entry pathway in fluid communication with the first port and the channel. 13. The chamber of claim 12 , wherein the entry pathway directs particles and liquid toward a sloped surface. 14. The chamber of claim 13 , wherein the sloped surface is part of the first port. 15. The chamber of claim 2 , wherein the third port is positioned in a top wall that further defines the second volume. 16. The chamber of claim 15 , wherein the top wall is angled with respect to the central axis. 17. The chamber of claim 16 , wherein the third port is co-linear with the central axis. 18. The chamber of claim 2 , wherein the first port is an inlet for introducing particles and liquid into the volume. 19. The chamber of claim 18 , wherein the second port is an outlet for removing particles from the volume. 20. The chamber of claim 19 , wherein the second port is an inlet for introducing liquid into the volume. 21. The chamber of claim 20 , wherein the third port is an outlet for removing liquid from the volume.
