A fitting subassembly includes a threaded fitting nut, a ferrule, and a retaining member. The fitting nut includes a radial drive surface and an interior wall defining a socket, with the ferrule at least partially disposed in the socket. The retaining member is separate from and retained in a recess in the fitting nut. The retaining member retains the ferrule with the fitting nut when the retaining member is in a first position prior to the fitting nut being assembled with the fitting body. The retaining member is radially movable from the first position to a second position within the fitting nut to release the ferrule from the fitting nut.

We claim: 1. A fitting subassembly comprising: a threaded fitting nut that can be joined with a threaded fitting body to form a fitting assembly, the fitting nut including a radial drive surface and an interior wall defining a socket; and a ferrule at least partially disposed in the socket; and a retaining member separate from and retained in a recess in the fitting nut; wherein the retaining member retains said ferrule with said fitting nut when the retaining member is in a first position prior to said fitting nut being assembled with said fitting body, the retaining member being movable to a second position within the fitting nut to release the ferrule from the fitting nut; and wherein the retaining member is radially expandable from the first position to the second position. 2. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member applies a retaining force that is limited to permit removal of the ferrule from the fitting nut by exposure to a force applying environment. 3. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member is moved from the first position to the second position when the front ferrule is pushed past the retaining member. 4. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the fitting subassembly comprises only metal parts. 5. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the fitting nut comprises a female threaded fitting nut. 6. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member interferes with an outer radial portion of the ferrule to retain said ferrule with said fitting nut when the retaining member is in the first position. 7. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member interferes with an outer conical surface of the ferrule to retain said ferrule with said fitting nut when the retaining member is in the first position. 8. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member is radially flexible to permit removal of the ferrule from the fitting nut. 9. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule is configured to snap through or otherwise move past the retaining member during an initial assembly of the ferrule with the fitting nut, a disassembly of the ferrule from the fitting nut, or a reassembly of the ferrule and the fitting nut for remake of the fitting subassembly with a fitting body and conduit. 10. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule is configured to snap through or otherwise move past the retaining member with about equal force during an initial assembly of the ferrule with the fitting nut, a disassembly of the ferrule from the fitting nut, or a reassembly of the ferrule and the fitting nut for remake of the fitting subassembly with a fitting body and conduit. 11. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule includes an outboard surface that blends to an outer diameter of the ferrule, such that during installation of the ferrule in the fitting nut, the outboard surface contacts the retaining member and enables the ferrule to snap through the retaining member. 12. The fitting subassembly of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member is radially resilient, such that the ferrule can be pushed past the retaining member during installation in the fitting nut, and then retained in the fitting nut by interfering with a radial inner dimension of the retaining member. 13. A fitting subassembly comprising: a threaded fitting nut that can be joined with a threaded fitting body to form a fitting assembly, the fitting nut including a radial drive surface and an interior wall defining a socket; and a ferrule at least partially disposed in the socket; and a retaining member separate from and retained in a recess in the fitting nut; wherein the retaining member retains said ferrule with said fitting nut when the retaining member is in a first position prior to said fitting nut being assembled with said fitting body, the retaining member being movable to a second position within the fitting nut to release the ferrule from the fitting nut; wherein the retaining member is radially movable from the first position to the second position; and wherein the retaining member comprises a split ring. 14. The fitting subassembly of claim 13 , wherein the retaining member is radially expandable from the first position to the second position. 15. A fitting subassembly comprising: a threaded fitting nut that can be joined with a threaded fitting body to form a fitting assembly, the fitting nut including a radial drive surface and an interior wall defining a socket; and a ferrule at least partially disposed in the socket; and a retaining member separate from and retained in a recess in the fitting nut; wherein the retaining member retains said ferrule with said fitting nut when the retaining member is in a first position prior to said fitting nut being assembled with said fitting body, the retaining member being movable to a second position within the fitting nut to release the ferrule from the fitting nut; wherein the retaining member is radially movable from the first position to the second position; and wherein the ferrule comprises a front ferrule, the fitting subassembly further comprising a back ferrule disposed entirely in the socket between the front ferrule and the drive surface. 16. The fitting subassembly of claim 15 , wherein the front ferrule and the back ferrule are connected together as a ferrule cartridge. 17. The fitting subassembly of claim 15 , wherein the front ferrule includes an extension defining a recess that receives a front portion of the back ferrule.
