Official abstract text for this publication.
Compositions and processes for producing high purity acesulfame potassium are described. One process comprises the steps of providing a crude acesulfame potassium composition comprising acesulfame potassium and acetoacetamide, concentrating the crude acesulfame potassium composition to form a water stream and an intermediate acesulfame potassium composition comprising acesulfame potassium and less than 33 wppm acetoacetamide, and separating the intermediate acesulfame potassium composition to form the finished acesulfame potassium composition comprising acesulfame potassium and less than 33 wppm acetoacetamide. The concentrating step is conducted at a temperature below 90° C. and the separating step is conducted at a temperature at or below 35° C.

We claim: 1. An acesulfame potassium composition comprising acesulfame potassium that is formed by a process that includes concentrating crude acesulfame potassium at a temperature below 90° C. to form an intermediate composition and separating the intermediate composition at a temperature at or below 35° C. to form the acesulfame potassium composition, wherein the acesulfame composition comprises less than 33 wppm acetoacetamide and less than 33 wppm acetoacetamide-N-sulfonic acid. 2. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , further comprising 0.001 wppm to 5 wppm organic impurities and/or 0.001 wppm to 5 wppm of at least one heavy metal. 3. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the acesulfame potassium composition comprises from 10 wppb to 15 wppm acetoacetamide. 4. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the acesulfame potassium composition comprises from 10 wppb to 10 wppm acetoacetamide. 5. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the acesulfame potassium composition comprises from 10 wppb to 7 wppm acetoacetamide. 6. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the acesulfame potassium composition comprises from 1 wppb to 20 wppm acetoacetamide-N-sulfonic acid. 7. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the finished acesulfame potassium composition comprises from 10 wppb to 10 wppm acetoacetamide and from 1 wppb to 20 wppm acetoacetamide-N-sulfonic acid. 8. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the finished acesulfame potassium composition comprises 0.001 wppm to 5 wppm organic impurities and/or 0.001 wppm to 5 wppm of at least one heavy metal. 9. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the concentrating step is conducted at a temperature below 85° C. and the separating step is conducted at a temperature at or below 20° C. 10. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the concentrating step is conducted for a residence time of less than 120 minutes. 11. The acesulfame potassium composition of claim 1 , wherein the separating step is conducted for a residence time of from 10 to 100 minutes.
