A bio-renewable flame-retardant compound is disclosed. The bio-renewable flame-retardant compound includes a cyclic structure formed in a reaction with a bio-renewable diene.

What is claimed is: 1. A bio-renewable flame-retardant compound, of formula: wherein R and R′ are alkyl moieties; and wherein the phenyl cyclic moiety is formed in a Diels-Alder reaction involving a bio-renew able diene and a dienophile. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the phosphate ester moieties is able to bind to a polymer. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein the bio-renewable diene is muconic acid.
