Embodiments of the present disclosure describe metal-organic framework compositions comprising a pillar characterized by the formula (MbF5(O/H2O)), where Mb is selected from periodic groups IIIA, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, and VIII; and a square grid characterized by the formula (Ma(ligand)x), where Ma is selected from periodic groups IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IVA, IVB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII, ligand is a polyfunctional organic ligand, and x is 1 or more; wherein the pillaring of the square grid with the pillars forms the metal-organic framework.

What is claimed is: 1. A metal-organic framework, comprising: a pillar characterized by the formula (M b F 5 (O/H 2 O)), where M b is selected from periodic groups IIIA, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, and VIII; and a square grid characterized by the formula (M a (ligand) x ), where M a is selected from periodic groups IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IVA, IVB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII, where the ligand is selected from pyrimidine, pyridazine, triazine, thiazole, oxazole, pyrrole, imidazole, pyrazole, triazole, oxadiazole, thiadiazole, quinoline, benzoxazole, and benzimidazole, where x is 1 or more; wherein the square grid and pillar associate to form the metal-organic framework and wherein the metal-organic framework includes open metal sites. 2. The metal-organic framework of claim 1 , wherein M b is selected from Al′, Ga 3+ , Fe +2 , Fe +3 , Cr 2+ , Cr 3+ , Ti 3+ , V 3+ , V 5+ , Sc 3+ , In 3+ , Nb 5+ , and Y 3+ . 3. The metal-organic framework of claim 1 , wherein M a is selected from Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Mn 2+ , Zr 2+ , Fe 2+ , Ca 2+ , Ba 2+ , Pb 2+ , Pt 2+ , Pd 2+ , Ru 2+ , Rh 2+ , Cd 2+ , Mg 2+ , Al +3 , Fe 2+ , Fe +3 , Cr 2+ , Cr 3+ , Ru 2+ , Ru 3+ , and Co 3+ . 4. The metal-organic framework of claim 1 , wherein the pillar is (NbOF 5 ) 2− , (AlF 5 (H 2 O)) 2− , or FeF 5 ((H 2 O)) 2− . 5. A metal-organic framework, comprising: a pillar characterized by the formula (M b F 5 (O/H 2 O)), where M b is selected from periodic groups IIIA, IIIB, IVB, VB, VIB, and VIII; and a square grid characterized by the formula (M a (ligand) x ), where M a is selected from periodic groups IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IVA, IVB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII, where the ligand is selected from pyrimidine, pyridazine, triazine, thiazole, oxazole, pyrrole, imidazole, pyrazole, triazole, oxadiazole, thiadiazole, quinoline, benzoxazole, and benzimidazole, where x is 1 or more; wherein the square grid and pillar associate to form the metal-organic framework and wherein the metal-organic framework includes a double-bonded oxygen.
