Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Elongated bodies made from high tenacity polyolefin fibers are provided that are useful as fishing lines, and processes for making the lines. Fibers having tenacities of at least 39 g/denier are braided and fused together to form braided bodies having very small diameters.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A braided body comprising a plurality of fibers, wherein said fibers are braided together to form said braided body, wherein at least one of said fibers forming the braided body comprises an ultrahigh molecular weight polyolefin fiber having a tenacity of at least 39 g/denier, and wherein at least one of said fibers forming the braided body comprises an aramid fiber or an aramid copolymer fiber, a polyethylene naphthalate fiber or a polyethylene naphthalate copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol fiber or an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyacrylonitrile fiber or an extended chain polyacrylonitrile copolymer fiber, a polybenzazole fiber or a polybenzazole copolymer fiber, a carbon fiber, a graphite fiber, a silicon carbide fiber, a boron carbide fiber, a glass fiber, a regenerated fiber, a metal fiber, a ceramic fiber, a liquid crystal copolyester fiber, or a blend thereof. 2. The braided body of claim 1 wherein said at least one ultrahigh molecular weight polyolefin fiber comprises a multifilament, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber. 3. The braided body of claim 2 wherein said multifilament fibers are either twisted or air entangled. 4. The braided body of claim 2 wherein said multifilament fibers are neither twisted nor air entangled. 5. The braided body of claim 2 wherein at least one of said fibers forming the braided body comprises an aramid fiber or an aramid copolymer fiber, a polyethylene naphthalate fiber or a polyethylene naphthalate copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol fiber or an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyacrylonitrile fiber or an extended chain polyacrylonitrile copolymer fiber, a polybenzazole fiber or a polybenzazole copolymer fiber, or a blend thereof. 6. The braided body of claim 2 wherein said at least one multifilament, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber has an intrinsic viscosity of greater than 19 dl/g, and wherein the braided body has a thermal shrinkage as determined by ASTM D4974 at 145° C. of less than 3.0%. 7. The braided body of claim 6 wherein the braided body has an elongation of less than 1.5% when subjected to a continuous stress equal to 10% of the breaking strength of the braided body for 10,000 minutes at room temperature. 8. The braided body of claim 1 wherein at least one of said fibers forming the braided body comprises a polyethylene naphthalate fiber or a polyethylene naphthalate copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol fiber or an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyacrylonitrile fiber or an extended chain polyacrylonitrile copolymer fiber, a polybenzazole fiber or a polybenzazole copolymer fiber, or a blend thereof. 9. The braided body of claim 1 wherein the braided body has a braid density of at least about 0.5 pick per inch up to 20 picks per inch in length of the braided body. 10. The braided body of claim 1 wherein the fibers forming the braided body are unfused and untwisted, and wherein the braided body has a Palomar knot strength of at least 50 lbf. 11. The braided body of claim 1 wherein the fibers forming the braided body each have a denier of from about 30 to about 400, and wherein the braided body comprises 50 or more discrete fibers. 12. The braided body of claim 1 wherein said braided body comprises a non-polyolefin fiber component comprising an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol fiber or an extended chain polyvinyl alcohol copolymer fiber, an extended chain polyacrylonitrile fiber or an extended chain polyacrylonitrile copolymer fiber, a polybenzazole fiber or a polybenzazole copolymer fiber, or a blend thereof. 13. An elongate body comprising one or more core fibers and a sheath that at least partially surrounds the one or more core fibers, wherein said sheath comprises a braided body as claimed in claim 1 . 14. The elongate body of claim 13 wherein the core fiber comprises a polyolefin fiber having a tenacity of at least 39 g/denier. 15. The elongate body of claim 14 wherein all of the fibers forming the core fiber are polyolefin fibers. 16. The elongate body of claim 13 wherein the core fiber comprises para-aramid or meta-aramid fibers. 17. The braided body of claim 1 wherein the braided body has a braid density of at least about 14 picks per inch up to 20 picks per inch in length of the braided body, and wherein at least one of the fibers forming the braided body is unfused and twisted. 18. The braided body of claim 1 wherein the braided body is not coated with any bonding resin/binder, wherein at least one of the fibers of the braided body is a twisted, multifilament, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber having a tenacity of at least about 43 g/denier, wherein the braided body has a braid density of from 14 picks per inch up to 20 picks per inch in length of the braided body, and wherein the braided body is a fishing line having a diameter of less than 0.5 mm. 19.
