A system for use in controlling operating functions of a controllable device includes a hand-held device and an intermediate device in communication with the hand-held device and the controllable device. The hand-held device is adapted to receive a gesture based input and to transmit a signal having data representative of the gesture based input. The intermediate device has programming for translating the data representative of the gesture based input in a signal received from the hand-held device into a command signal to be communicated to the controllable device wherein the command signal has a format appropriate for controlling an operating function of the controllable device that is associated with the gesture based input.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for using a remote control device, comprising: detecting a gesture-based, user input at a user input element of the remote control device, the detected gesture-based input having a one of a plurality of gesture-based input types; determining a gesture-receiving mode of the remote control device at a time when the gesture-based, user input event having the one of the plurality of gesture-based input types is received at the user input element of the remote control device; and causing a first command instruction selected from a library of command instructions to be executed by the remote control device when it is determined that the gesture-receiving mode of the remote control device at the time when the gesture-based, user input having the one of the plurality of gesture-based input types is received at the user input element of the remote control device is a first gesture-receiving mode and causing a second command instruction selected from the library of commands instructions to be executed by the remote control device when it is determined that the gesture-receiving mode of the remote control device at the time when the gesture-based, user input having the one of the plurality of gesture-based input types is received at the user input element of the remote control device is a second gesture-receiving mode. 2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein, when the one of the plurality of gesture-based input types a horizontal swiping motion made across the user input element of the remote control device, the first command action comprises an instruction to cause the remote control device to transmit a command to control a functional operation of an appliance and the second command action comprises an instruction to cause the remote control device to scroll a graphical user interface displayed in a display associated with the remote control device. 3. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the user input element comprises the display. 4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the remote control device comprises a smart phone executing a remote control application. 5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first command instruction comprises an instruction to cause the remote control to issue a command communication to an intermediate device and the method further comprises: using by the intermediate device data in the command communication received from the remote control device to select at least one command code data set from a library of command code data sets stored in a memory of the intermediate device and to identify at least one command code in the selected at least one command code data set; and using by the intermediate device the identified at least one command code in the identified at least one command code data set to create and transmit to at least one target controllable appliance a command signal, wherein the command signal has a format appropriate for controlling at least one operating function of the at least one target controllable device. 6. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the at least one operating function of the at least one target controllable device comprises a media rendering pause function or a volume mute function. 7. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the library of command code data sets is stored in the memory prior to the intermediate device receiving the signal from the remote control device. 8. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein at least a portion of the library of command code data sets is downloaded from a network server device and then stored in the memory. 9. The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising causing the intermediate device to transmit to the remote control device a status signal having data indicative of a status of the intermediate device resulting from the intermediate device receiving the command communication from the remote control device.
