An orthopaedic surgical instrument system includes a tibial base trial and a tibial insert trial. An insert adaptor is sized to be positioned in an aperture defined in the tibial insert trial. The insert adaptor includes a base sized to be positioned over a post of the tibial base trial and a locking tab positioned in the base and configured to engage the post of the tibial base trial.

The invention claimed is: 1. An orthopaedic surgical instrument system comprising: a tibial base trial including a plate configured to be positioned on a proximal end of a patient's tibia and a post extending outwardly from a superior surface of the plate, a tibial insert trial including (i) an inferior surface configured to abut the superior surface of the plate, (ii) a pair of curved surfaces positioned opposite the inferior surface, (iii) a spine positioned between the pair of curved surfaces, and (iv) an aperture defined in the inferior surface, and an insert adaptor sized to be positioned in the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial, the insert adaptor including (i) a base sized to be positioned over the post of the tibial base trial so that the post is received in an opening of the base and (ii) a locking tab positioned in the opening of the base, wherein the post of the tibial base trial includes a superior flange configured to engage the locking tab of the insert adaptor to prevent movement of the insert adaptor in an inferior-superior direction relative to the tibial base trial, wherein the insert adaptor can be positioned in the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial without rotating the tibial insert trial or the insert adaptor, and wherein the tibial insert trial includes a pin extending from a superior end wall of the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial, and the insert adaptor includes a plug extending outwardly from the base, wherein an aperture is defined through the plug, wherein the pin of the tibial insert trial is received in the aperture defined through the plug when the insert adaptor is positioned in the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial. 2. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein: a channel is defined between the superior flange and the superior surface of the plate, and the locking tab is sized to be positioned in the channel. 3. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein: the post includes a stem extending outwardly from the plate to the superior flange, and the locking tab includes a pair of arms configured to engage the stem of the post. 4. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 3 , wherein each arm of the pair of arms is a spring clip. 5. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein: the tibial insert trial includes a first posterior slot that opens into the aperture, the insert adaptor has a second posterior slot positioned superior of the locking tab, and when the insert adaptor is positioned in the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial, the first posterior slot and the second posterior slot are aligned to define a posterior passageway sized to receive the superior flange of the post to permit the insert adaptor and the tibial insert trial to move in an anterior-posterior direction relative to the tibial base trial. 6. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 5 , wherein the post includes a stem extending outwardly from the plate to the superior flange, and the locking tab includes a spring clip configured to engage the stem of the post. 7. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 6 , wherein the insert adaptor includes a cavity extending from the aperture, wherein a curved wall defines an inferior section of the cavity, and the spring clip is positioned in the inferior section of the cavity and is spaced apart from the curved wall. 8. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 7 , wherein the locking tab further includes a trunk extending inwardly from the curved wall to the spring clip. 9. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the plug is configured to prevent relative rotation between the insert adaptor and the tibial insert trial, wherein the plug includes a planar outer surface that is configured to engage a planar inner surface of the tibial insert trial to prevent relative rotation between the insert adaptor and the tibial insert trial. 10. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising: a femoral component including (i) a pair of curved surfaces configured to abut the curved surfaces of the tibial insert trial, and (ii) a pair of transverse bores extending in a medial-lateral direction through the femoral component, and an elongated pin sized to be positioned in the transverse bores, wherein the spine of the tibial insert trial includes a bore extending in the medial-lateral direction that is sized to receive the elongated pin to couple the femoral component to the tibial insert trial. 11. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 10 , wherein the femoral prosthetic component is configured to articulate relative to the tibial insert trial over a range of motion including extension and flexion, and the tibial insert trial and the insert adaptor are configured to rotate about an axis extending through the post of the tibial base trial. 12. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a retention mechanism extending through the plug into the aperture defined through the plug, wherein the retention mechanism engages an outer surface of the pin when the insert adaptor is positioned in the aperture defined in the tibial insert trial. 13. An orthopaedic surgical instrument system comprising: a tibial base trial including a plate configured to be positioned on a proximal end of a patient's tibia and a post extending outwardly from a superior surface of the plate to a superior flange, and a tibial trial component configured to be positioned over the post of the tibial base trial, the tibial trial component including (i) an inferior surface configured to abut the superior surface of the plate, (ii) a pair of curved surfaces positioned opposite the inferior surface, and (iii) a spine positioned between the pair of curved surfaces, wherein the tibial trial component includes a posterior passageway extending from an opening and sized to receive the superior flange of the post to permit the tibial trial component to move in an anterior-posterior direction relative to the tibial base trial, wherein the tibial trial component includes a first modular component and a second modular component, wherein the first modular component can be positioned in an aperture defined in the second modular component without rotating the first modular component or the second modular component, and wherein the second modular component includes a pin extending from a superior end wall of the aperture defined in the second modular component, and the first modular component includes a plug extending outwardly from a base, wherein an aperture is defined through the plug, wherein the pin of the second modular component is received in the aperture defined through the plug when the first modular component is positioned in the aperture defined in the second modular component. 14. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 13 , further comprising a locking mechanism including a locking tab coupled to the tibial trial component and the superior flange of the post, wherein the superior flange of the post is configured to engage the locking tab to prevent movement of the first modular component in an inferior-superior direction relative to the tibial base trial. 15. The orthopaedic surgical instrument system of claim 14 , wherein the locking tab includes a spring clip. 16.
