Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Tracing subterranean fluid flow includes providing a first polymeric tracer to a first injector, collecting a first aqueous sample from a first producer, and assessing the presence of the first polymeric tracer in the first aqueous sample. The first polymeric tracer includes a first polymer formed from at least a first monomer. The presence of the first polymeric tracer in the first aqueous sample is assessed by removing water from the first aqueous sample to yield a first dehydrated sample. pyrolyzing the first dehydrated sample to yield a first gaseous sample, and assessing the presence of a pyrolization product of the first polymer in the first gaseous sample. The presence of the pyrolization product of the first polymer in the first gaseous sample is indicative of the presence of a first subterranean flow pathway between the first injector location and the first producer location.

What is claimed is: 1. An oilfield polymeric tracer library for oilfield tracer applications, comprising: a multiplicity of polymeric tracers to trace connectivity in interconnected subterranean systems, each of the polymeric tracers comprising: a polymeric core, the polymeric core comprising a polymer that thermally depolymerizes into one or more pyrolization products, a polymer layer surrounding the polymeric core to protect the polymeric core in a subterranean formation, and a surfactant layer disposed between the polymer layer and the polymeric core, wherein each of the polymeric tracers is a nanoparticle, and wherein the one or more pyrolization products of the polymer of each of the polymeric cores of the multiplicity of polymeric tracers differs in molecular mass from the one or more pyrolization products of the polymer of other polymeric cores of the multiplicity of polymeric tracers. 2. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more pyrolization products of the polymer comprises a constituent monomer of the polymer. 3. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more pyrolization products of the polymer comprises a substituent of a constituent monomer of the polymer. 4. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises independently a polystyrene, a polyacrylate, a polymethacrylate, or a vinyl polymer, or any combinations thereof. 5. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant layer is coated on the polymeric core. 6. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein the oilfield polymeric tracer library facilitates tracing subterranean fluid flows in the subterranean formation. 7. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 1 , wherein the polymer independently is a styrenic polymer, a polyacrylate, a polymethacrylate, or a vinyl polymer, or any combinations thereof, wherein the surfactant layer comprises an anionic surfactant, and wherein the polymeric layer independently comprises polyethyleneimine or a crosslinked carbohydrate-based coating. 8. An oilfield polymeric tracer library for oilfield tracer applications, comprising: a multiplicity of polymeric tracers to trace connectivity in interconnected subterranean systems, each of the polymeric tracers comprising: a polymeric core that thermally depolymerizes into a constituent monomer of the polymeric core, a polymer layer surrounding the polymeric core to protect the polymeric core in a subterranean formation, and a surfactant layer disposed between the polymer layer and the polymeric core, wherein each of the polymeric tracers is a nanoparticle, and wherein the constituent monomer of each of the polymeric cores of the multiplicity of polymeric tracers differs in molecular mass from the constituent monomer of other polymeric cores of the multiplicity of polymeric tracers. 9. The oilfield polymeric tracer library of claim 8 , wherein the polymeric core is a polystyrene, a polyacrylate, a polymethacrylate, or a vinyl polymer, or any combinations thereof. 10.
