Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicle body structure with a cargo area structure, a retractable step and a handle assembly. The cargo area structure has a floor, a first side wall and a tailgate at least partially defining a cargo area. The handle assembly has a base and a grip handle. The base is attached to an upright surface of the first side wall. The grip handle is movable relative to the base between a stowed orientation in which the grip handle is at a location lower than an upper surface of the first side wall and a gripping orientation in which at least a portion of the grip handle extends higher that the upper surface of the first side wall. With the grip handle in the gripping orientation an individual using the step to enter the cargo area grabs the grip handle for assistance in stepping up into the cargo area.

What is claimed is: 1. A vehicle body structure, comprising: a vehicle cargo structure having a floor, a first side wall and a tailgate at least partially defining a cargo area, the tailgate being movable between an open orientation exposing a rear end of the cargo area and a closed orientation blocking the rear end of the cargo area; a handle assembly having a base and a grip handle, the base having a pivot shaft non-movably attached thereto that is horizontally oriented and extends in an inboard direction from the base with the base being non-movably attached to an upright surface of the first side wall above the floor within the cargo area, and the grip handle being pivotal about the pivot shaft between a stowed orientation in which the grip handle is at a location lower than an upper surface of the first side wall and a gripping orientation in which at least a portion of the grip handle extends higher than the upper surface of the first side wall such that with the grip handle in the gripping orientation an individual entering the cargo area grabs the grip handle for assistance in stepping up into the cargo area, the grip handle being an elongated rod that pivots about the pivot shaft, the grip handle having a hollow interior; and a position locking mechanism configured to retain the grip handle in at least one of the stowed orientation and the gripping orientation, the position locking mechanism having a locking pin and a coil spring, the locking pin being spring biased by the coil spring to a position locking orientation, the coil spring being disposed within the hollow interior of the elongated rod and with the entirety of the coil spring coiling around a section of the locking pin disposed within the hollow interior. 2. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the elongated rod of the grip handle includes an aperture that receives the pivot shaft with a first portion extending from one side of the aperture and a second portion extending from an opposite side of the aperture, the first portion being longer than the second portion. 3. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the base of the handle assembly is directly attached to the first side wall via mechanical fasteners such that the base overlays a portion of the upright surface. 4. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the base includes a first aperture positioned such that with the grip handle in the gripping orientation and the locking pin in the position locking orientation, a section of the locking pin extends into the first aperture preventing movement of the grip handle. 5. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the base includes a second aperture positioned such that with the grip handle in the stowed orientation and the locking pin in the position locking orientation, the section of the locking pin extends into the second aperture preventing movement of the grip handle. 6. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , further comprising a retractable step installed to the vehicle cargo area structure beneath the floor and the first side wall and adjacent to the tailgate. 7. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the base of the handle assembly includes a vertically oriented portion that includes an aperture extending therethrough such that the locking pin is inserted into the aperture when the grip handle is locked to the at least one of the stowed orientation and the gripping orientation. 8. The vehicle body structure according to claim 7 , wherein the locking pin is dimensioned such that when the grip handle is locked to the at least one of the stowed orientation and the gripping orientation a portion of the locking pin is located within the aperture and a portion of the locking pin is located outside of the aperture extending away from the vertically oriented portion of the base. 9. The vehicle body structure according to claim 8 , wherein the grip handle is configured such that in the stowed orientation, the grip handle extends parallel to the first side wall. 10. The vehicle body structure according to claim 9 , wherein when the grip handle is in the gripping orientation, pulling the position locking mechanism in an inboard direction, compresses the spring against a portion of the rod and pulls the locking pin in an inboard direction and out of the aperture in the base. 11. The vehicle body structure according to claim 10 , wherein the grip handle extends vertically upward in the gripping orientation such that the individual grabs a free upper end of the grip handle for assistance in stepping up into the cargo area. 12. The vehicle body structure according to claim 1 , wherein the first side wall includes a support pillar located rearward of the handle assembly, the support pillar has a lower main inboard surface and an upper inboard surface, the upper inboard surface extending in an outboard direction from the lower main inboard surface toward the upper surface of the first side wall, and the base of the handle assembly is located at a corner defined by to the upper inboard surface of the support pillar and the upper surface of the first side wall, the handle assembly being located above the lower main surface of the support pillar with the grip handle in the gripping orientation. 13. A vehicle body structure, comprising: a vehicle cargo structure having a floor, a first side wall and a tailgate at least partially defining a cargo area, the tailgate being movable between an open orientation exposing a rear end of the cargo area and a closed orientation blocking the rear end of the cargo area; a retractable step installed to the vehicle cargo area structure beneath the floor and the first side wall and adjacent to the tailgate; and a handle assembly having a base and a grip handle, the base having a pivot shaft non-movably attached thereto that is horizontally oriented and extends in an inboard direction from the base with the base being non-movably attached to an upright surface of the first side wall above the floor within the cargo area, and the grip handle being pivotal about the pivot shaft between a stowed orientation in which the grip handle is at a location lower than an upper surface of the first side wall and a gripping orientation in which at least a portion of the grip handle extends higher than the upper surface of the first side wall such that with the grip handle in the gripping orientation an individual using the step to enter the cargo area grabs the grip handle for assistance in stepping up into the cargo area, the base including an attachment portion, a first stop portion and a second stop portion that are positioned and oriented such that the grip handle is limited to pivoting movement between the first stop portion and the second stop portion. 14. The vehicle body structure according to claim 13 , wherein the base portion defines a first plane such that the first stop portion extends away from the base portion in a direction that is perpendicular to the first plane and the second stop portion extends away from the base portion in a direction that is perpendicular to the first plane and extends in a direction perpendicular to a second plane defined along a lengthwise direction of the first stop portion. 15. The vehicle body structure according to claim 13 , wherein the grip handle includes a position locking mechanism that retains the grip handle in at least one of the stowed orientation and the gripping orientation. 16. The vehicle body structure according to claim 13 , wherein the
