An electric vehicle includes an energy storage system, an integrated drive system assembly having a gearbox, a power inverter, and an electric motor, wherein the gearbox, the electric motor and the power inverter are assembled into a single unit with a multi-piece housing. The electric vehicle may also include two half shafts for respective wheels of the electric vehicle. The gearbox, the electric motor and the power inverter may be oriented such that the gearbox extends along a center line of the electric vehicle and the electric motor and the power inverter extend from the gearbox in opposite directions. The electric vehicle may also include a mutual thermal management system coupled to the integrated drive system assembly and having at least one liquid coolant loop that is thermally coupled to the electric motor, the power inverter, the gearbox, a cooling system, a refrigeration system, and an HVAC system.

What is claimed is: 1. An electric vehicle comprising: an energy storage system; an integrated drive system assembly having: a gearbox; a power inverter attached to the gearbox; and an electric motor mechanically coupled to the gearbox, the electric motor electrically connected to the power inverter, wherein the gearbox, the electric motor and the power inverter are assembled into a single unit with a multi-piece housing. 2. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising two half shafts for respective wheels of the electric vehicle, the half shafts extending from the gearbox on respective opposite sides thereof. 3. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the gearbox, the electric motor and the power inverter has a T-shape architecture with the gearbox extending along a center line of the T-shape architecture and the electric motor and the power inverter extending from the gearbox in opposite directions along a cross line of the T-shape architecture. 4. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of rigid, solid metal bus bars that electrically connect the power inverter to the electric motor. 5. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the multi-piece housing comprises a first cylindrical housing of the electric motor and a second cylindrical housing of the power inverter. 6. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a subframe configured for mounting the single unit to the electric vehicle. 7. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor is positioned on a first side of a center line of the electric vehicle and the power inverter is positioned on a second side of the center line of the electric vehicle. 8. The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a vehicle thermal management system thermally coupled to the integrated drive system assembly and having at least one liquid coolant loop that thermally couples to the electric motor, the power inverter, and the gearbox. 9. The electric vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop includes at least one of: stator coolant channels; a gearbox coolant plate; or an inverter cold plate. 10. The electric vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop couples to the integrated drive system assembly via a single coolant inlet and a single coolant output. 11. An electric vehicle comprising: an energy storage system; a gearbox; a power inverter attached to the gearbox; an electric motor mechanically coupled to the gearbox, the electric motor electrically connected to the power inverter; and a vehicle thermal management system having at least one liquid coolant loop thermally coupled to the energy storage system, the electric motor, the power inverter, and the gearbox. 12. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop includes at least one of: stator coolant channels; a gearbox coolant plate; or an inverter cold plate. 13. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop couples to the gearbox, power inverter, and electric motor via a single coolant inlet and a single coolant output. 14. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , further comprising a cooling system thermally coupled to the vehicle thermal management system. 15. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , further comprising a refrigeration system thermally coupled to the vehicle thermal management system. 16. The electric vehicle of claim 11 , further comprising a passenger cabin heating, ventilation and air conditioning system thermally coupled to the vehicle thermal management system. 17. An integrated drive system assembly for an electric vehicle comprising: a gearbox; a power inverter attached to the gearbox, the power inverter operable to convert current supplied by an energy storage system; and an electric motor mechanically coupled to the gearbox, the electric motor electrically connected to the power inverter, wherein the integrated drive system assembly is coupled to a mutual thermal management system having at least one liquid coolant loop, the mutual thermal management system being thermally coupled to the energy storage system, the electric motor, the power inverter, and the gearbox. 18. The integrated drive system assembly of claim 17 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop includes at least one of: stator coolant channels; a gearbox coolant plate; or an inverter cold plate. 19. The integrated drive system assembly of claim 17 , wherein the at least one liquid coolant loop couples to the gearbox, power inverter, and electric motor via a single coolant inlet and a single coolant output. 20. The integrated drive system assembly of claim 17 , wherein the mutual thermal management system is further thermally coupled to: a cooling system; a refrigeration system thermally; and a passenger cabin heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
