Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A mold includes a main body and a separable feature. One or more first weakened regions join the separable feature to the main body. The one or more first weakened regions are breakable to enable the main body to be removed from a shell independently of the separable feature after the shell is formed over the mold. The main body includes a first section and a second section that are at least partially separable at one or more second weakened regions to enable the first section to be removed from the shell independently of the second section after the shell is formed over the mold.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A mold comprising: a main body comprising a first section of the mold and a second section of the mold, the first section being of at least a portion of one or more first teeth of a dental arch and the second section being of at least a portion of one or more second teeth of the dental arch; a separable feature; one or more first weakened regions that join the separable feature to the main body, wherein the one or more first weakened regions are breakable to enable the main body to be removed from a shell independently of the separable feature after the shell is formed over the mold; and one or more second weakened regions, wherein the first section and the second section are at least partially separable at the one or more second weakened regions to enable the first section to be removed from the shell independently of the second section after the shell is formed over the mold. 2. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the mold comprises a 3D printed mold. 3. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the mold is of the dental arch for a patient and the shell comprises at least one of an orthodontic aligner, an orthodontic retainer, or an orthodontic splint to be used for at least one of aligning, retaining or positioning one or more teeth of the patient. 4. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the separable feature is retentive, and wherein the one or more first weakened regions surround the separable feature. 5. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the one or more second weakened regions are breakable to enable the first section to be removed from the shell independently of the second section after the shell is formed over the mold. 6. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first weakened regions comprise at least one of a void or a cut at a border between the main body and the separable feature in the mold that extends through less than an entirety the mold at the border. 7. The mold of claim 1 , wherein existence of the one or more first weakened regions does not materially affect a final shape of the shell. 8. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the main body and the separable feature are portions of a single uniform body. 9. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first weakened regions are achieved based on at least one of a weakening geometry, weakening build parameters, or materials that introduce weakening. 10. The mold of claim 1 , wherein the one or more first weakened regions comprise one or more breakable support structures that join the separable feature to the main body. 11. A mold comprising: a main body, the main body being a model of a plurality of teeth of a dental arch; a separable feature that spans two or more teeth of the plurality of teeth of the dental arch; and one or more weakened regions that join the separable feature to the main body, wherein the one or more weakened regions are breakable to enable the main body to be removed from a shell independently of the separable feature after the shell is formed over the mold. 12. The mold of claim 11 , wherein the one or more weakened regions form a void at a border of the separable feature and the main body. 13. The mold of claim 12 , wherein the one or more weakened regions comprise one or more support structures that span the void. 14. The mold of claim 13 , wherein the one or more weakened regions surround the separable feature. 15. The mold of claim 13 , wherein the main body, the separable feature, and the one or more support structures are portions of a single contiguous mold. 16. The mold of claim 11 , wherein the shell comprises at least one of an orthodontic aligner, an orthodontic retainer, or an orthodontic splint to be used for at least one of aligning, retaining, or positioning one or more teeth of a patient. 17. A mold comprising: a main body, the main body being a model of a plurality of teeth of a dental arch; a separable feature, wherein a border of the separable feature is separated by a void from the main body; and one or more support structures that span the void to connect the separable feature and the main body, wherein the one or more support structures are breakable to enable the main body to be removed from a shell independently of the separable feature after the shell is formed over the mold. 18. The mold of claim 17 , wherein the separable feature spans two or more teeth of the dental arch. 19. The mold of claim 17 , wherein the main body, the separable feature, and the one or more support structures are portions of a single contiguous mold. 20. The mold of claim 17 , wherein the shell comprises at least one of an orthodontic aligner, an orthodontic retainer, or an orthodontic splint to be used for at least one of aligning, retaining, or positioning one or more teeth of a patient.
