Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A drill bit includes a shank and a body portion defining a plurality of axially stacked, progressively sized steps. The steps include a first step and a terminal step. The first step defines two tip flutes each disposed at a tip flute angle. The body portion defines a body flute extending through the steps. The drill bit also includes an indicator band formed on a portion of the body flute and a portion of an outer surface of one of the plurality of steps.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A drill bit comprising: a shank extending along a bit axis; a body portion coupled to the shank, the body portion having a distal end and defining a plurality of axially stacked, progressively sized steps including a first step at the distal end and a terminal step nearer the shank than the first step, the body portion further defining a body flute extending from the first step to the terminal step; a first indicator band formed on an outer surface of one of the plurality of steps; a second indicator band formed on an outer surface of another one of the plurality of steps that is non-adjacent the one of the plurality of steps; and wherein at least one step of the body portion positioned between the one of the plurality of steps having the first indicator band and the another one of the plurality of steps having the second indicator band is without an indicator band. 2. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the at least one step of the body portion positioned between the one of the plurality of steps having the first indicator band and the another one of the plurality of steps having the second indicator band includes three adjacent steps of the body portion, each of the three adjacent steps being without an indicator band. 3. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein each of the first indicator band and the second indicator band contrasts with a surface finish of the body portion. 4. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of steps has a diameter of ⅜ inch, ½ inch, ¾ inch, or ⅞ inch. 5. The drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising indicia on the flute surface, the indicia corresponding to axial depths of the plurality of steps. 6. The drill bit of claim 5 , wherein the indicia include numbers indicative of diameters of the plurality of steps. 7. The drill bit of claim 1 , wherein the second indicator band is formed on an outer surface of the terminal step. 8. The drill bit of claim 1 , further comprising a third indicator band formed on an outer surface of yet another one of the plurality of steps that is non-adjacent the one of the plurality of steps or the another one of the plurality of steps. 9. The drill bit of claim 8 , wherein the at least one step of the body portion positioned between the one of the plurality of steps having the first indicator band and the another one of the plurality of steps having the second indicator band is only one step; and three steps are positioned between the another one of the plurality of steps having the second indicator band and the yet another one of the plurality of steps having the third indicator band, the three steps being without respective indicator bands. 10. The drill bit of claim 9 , wherein the third indicator band is formed on an outer surface of the terminal step. 11. The drill bit of claim 9 , further comprising a fourth indicator band formed on an outer surface of still another one of the plurality of steps; and wherein one step is positioned between the yet another one of the plurality of steps having the third indicator band and the still another one of the plurality of steps having the fourth indicator band, the one step being without an indicator band. 12. The drill bit of claim 11 , wherein the fourth indicator band is formed on an outer surface of the terminal step. 13. A drill bit comprising: a shank extending along a bit axis; a body portion coupled to the shank, the body portion having a distal end and defining a plurality of axially stacked, progressively sized steps including a first step at the distal end and a terminal step nearer the shank than the first step, the body portion further defining a body flute having a flute surface extending from the first step to the terminal step; indicia on the flute surface, the indicia corresponding to at least two axial depths of the plurality of steps; a plurality of indicator bands, each indicator band formed on a respective step of the plurality of steps; and wherein less than half of the plurality of steps includes respective indicator bands of the plurality of indicator bands to differentiate the corresponding step from the other steps. 14. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein each indicator band of the plurality of indicator bands is formed on an outer surface of the respective step of the plurality of steps. 15. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein the indicia include numbers indicative of diameters of the plurality of steps. 16. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein the indicator bands are located on non-adjacent steps of the plurality of steps. 17. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein each indicator band contrasts with a surface finish of the flute surface. 18. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein the indicia correspond to the axial depth of each of the plurality of steps. 19. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein the one of the plurality of steps has a diameter of ⅜ inch, ½ inch, ¾ inch, or ⅞ inch. 20. The drill bit of claim 13 , wherein one of the plurality of indicator bands is formed on the terminal step.
