A reduction-oxidation flow battery wherein the catholyte and/or the anolyte are selected from among respective defined groups of polyoxometalate compounds.

The invention claimed is: 1. A reduction-oxidation flow battery comprising: a first electrolyte storage tank containing an anolyte, which comprises one of the following species: (i) C 4 SiW 12 O 40 with cation C which is either: H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof; (ii) C 4 SiMo 12 O 40 with cation C which is either: H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof; (iii) C 3 PW 12 O 40 with cation C which is either: H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof; or (iv) C 5 AlW 12 O 40 with cation C which is either: H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof; and a second electrolyte storage tank containing a catholyte, which comprises one of the following species: (i) C 6 V 10 O 28 with cation C which is either H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof; or (ii) C 9 PV 14 O 42 with cation C which is either H + , Li + , Na + ; or a mixture thereof. 2. A reduction-oxidation flow battery according to claim 1 wherein the anolyte is in aqueous solution with a supporting electrolyte of one or a mixture of: (i) Na 2 SO 4 (ii) Li 2 SO 4 (iii) LiCH 3 COO or (iv) NaCH 3 COO (v) HCl (vi) H 3 PO 4 (vii) H 2 SO 4 . 3. A reduction-oxidation flow battery according to claim 1 wherein the catholyte is provided in aqueous solution with a supporting electrolyte of one or a mixture of: (i) Na 2 SO 4 (ii) Li 2 SO 4 (iii) LiCH 3 COO or (iv) NaCH 3 COO (v) HCl (vi) H 3 PO 4 (vii) H 2 SO 4 . 4. A reduction-oxidation flow battery according to claim 1 wherein the ion selective membrane comprises a cation exchange membrane based on a perfluorosulfonic acid polymer membrane.
