A device and associated system for threading, cutting, and reaming pipe ends. The device and system utilize a brushless DC electric motor. The devices also include on-board electronics and operator interface(s) to provide sophisticated control and information as to the various operations. Methods of operating the devices and several different modes for performing various operations.

What is claimed is: 1. A powered threader device comprising: a frame assembly; a releasable chuck assembly adapted for retaining and rotating a workpiece about a workpiece central axis; a brushless DC electric motor supported by the frame assembly, the motor providing a powered rotary output in engagement with the chuck assembly to thereby rotate the workpiece; a positionable die assembly for forming threads in the workpiece, the die assembly including a receding die head; wherein the brushless DC electric motor is an electronically commutated motor. 2. The threader device of claim 1 wherein the brushless DC electric motor includes a segmented tooth stator. 3. The threader device of claim 1 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a permanent magnet brushless electric motor. 4. The threader device of claim 1 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a switched reluctance brushless electric motor. 5. The threader device of claim 1 further comprising a reamer assembly. 6. The threader device of claim 1 further comprising a cutter assembly. 7. A powered threader device comprising: a frame assembly; a brushless DC electric motor supported on the frame assembly, the motor providing a powered rotary output; a releasable chuck assembly supported on the frame assembly adapted for retaining and rotating a workpiece about a workpiece central axis; a drive train for transmitting rotary motion from the rotary output of the brushless electric motor to the chuck assembly; a positionable die assembly supported on the frame assembly for forming threads in the workpiece, the die assembly including a receding die head; control provisions for controlling rotation of the workpiece and position of the die assembly while forming threads in the workpiece; wherein the brushless DC electric motor is an electronically commutated motor. 8. The threader device of claim 7 wherein the brushless DC electric motor includes a segmented tooth stator. 9. The threader device of claim 7 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a permanent magnet brushless electric motor. 10. The threader device of claim 7 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a switched reluctance brushless electric motor. 11. The threader device of claim 7 further comprising a reamer assembly. 12. The threader device of claim 7 further comprising a cutter assembly. 13. A powered threader device comprising: a frame assembly; a releasable chuck assembly adapted for retaining and rotating a workpiece about a workpiece central axis; a brushless DC electric motor supported by the frame assembly, the motor providing a powered rotary output in engagement with the chuck assembly to thereby rotate the workpiece; a positionable die assembly for forming threads in the workpiece, the die assembly including a universal die head; wherein the brushless DC electric motor is an electronically commutated motor. 14. The threader device of claim 13 wherein the brushless DC electric motor includes a segmented tooth stator. 15. The threader device of claim 13 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a permanent magnet brushless electric motor. 16. The threader device of claim 13 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a switched reluctance brushless electric motor. 17. The threader device of claim 13 further comprising a reamer assembly. 18. The threader device of claim 13 further comprising a cutter assembly. 19. A powered threader device comprising: a frame assembly; a brushless DC electric motor supported on the frame assembly, the motor providing a powered rotary output; a releasable chuck assembly supported on the frame assembly adapted for retaining and rotating a workpiece about a workpiece central axis; a drive train for transmitting rotary motion from the rotary output of the brushless electric motor to the chuck assembly; a positionable die assembly supported on the frame assembly for forming threads in the workpiece, the die assembly including a universal die head; control provisions for controlling rotation of the workpiece and position of the die assembly while forming threads in the workpiece; wherein the brushless DC electric motor is an electronically commutated motor. 20. The threader device of claim 19 wherein the brushless DC electric motor includes a segmented tooth stator. 21. The threader device of claim 19 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a permanent magnet brushless electric motor. 22. The threader device of claim 19 wherein the brushless DC electric motor is a switched reluctance brushless electric motor. 23. The threader device of claim 19 further comprising a reamer assembly. 24. The threader device of claim 19 further comprising a cutter assembly.
