Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Reduced-pair Ethernet patch cords include a twisted pair cable that has a pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket. A connector is mounted on a first end of the cable. The connector includes a connector housing and a strain relief unit that is mounted on the cable at the interface between the cable and the connector housing. The strain relief unit includes a plurality of internal protrusions that contact the cable jacket.

That which is claimed is: 1. A reduced-pair Ethernet patch cord system, comprising: a cable having a single pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket; and a connector mounted on a first end of the cable, the connector including a connector housing containing exactly one pair of socket contacts comprising a first socket contact and a second socket contact, wherein the first socket contact is a tip socket contact that resides in a first horizontal plane paralleling an elongate axis of the connector and the second socket contact is a ring socket contact that resides in a second horizontal plane that is beneath and parallel to the first horizontal plane. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second socket contacts are vertically offset from one another. 3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a strain relief structure that resists rotation of the cable relative to the first connector. 4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the strain relief structure comprises a cable-gripping member and a compression member that compresses the cable-gripping member against the cable. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the cable-gripping member includes a first plurality of cantilevered arms that apply a radially compressive force on the cable-gripping member. 6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the connector includes a first end and a cable receiving end opposite the first end, the cable receiving end including an aperture that receives the cable, wherein the compression member positions the cable-gripping member within the aperture and interfaces with the connector housing to lock a position of the compression member relative to the connector housing. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the compression member includes a second plurality of cantilevered arms that compresses the first plurality of cantilevered arms when in the locked position. 8. The system of claim 6 , wherein at least a portion of the first plurality of cantilevered arms include a plurality of elongate teeth the depress the cable jacket when the compression member is in the locked position. 9. A reduced-pair Ethernet patch cord system, comprising: a first twisted pair cable that includes: a first single twisted pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket; and a first connector mounted on a first end of the first cable, the first connector including a connector housing containing exactly one pair of socket contacts comprising a first socket contact and a second socket contact, wherein the first socket contact is a tip socket that resides in a first horizontal plane and the second socket contact is a ring socket that resides in a second horizontal plane that is beneath and parallel to the first horizontal plane; a second twisted pair cable that includes: a second single twisted pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket; and a second connector mounted on a first end of the second cable, the second connector including a connector housing containing exactly one pair of socket contacts comprising a first socket contact and a second socket contact, wherein the first socket contact is a ring socket that resides in the first horizontal plane and the second socket contact is a tip socket that resides in the second horizontal plane; and an inline connector comprising a pair of double-sided pin contacts, wherein each of the double-sided pin contacts reside in both the first horizontal plane and the second horizontal plane and connect the tip socket of the first connector to the tip socket of the second connector and connect the ring socket of the first connector to the ring socket of the second connector. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the tip and ring contacts of each of the first and second connector are staggered in two vertical rows. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the double-sided pin contacts includes a crossover segment that connects a first side of the respective double-sided pin contact to a second side of the respective double-sided pin contact. 12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the crossover segment of each of the double-sided pin contacts occurs at a middle of each of the double-sided pin contacts. 13. The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the first and second twisted pair cables additionally include a strain relief structure that resist rotation of the respective cable relative to the respective connector. 14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the strain relief structure comprises a cable-gripping member and a compression member that compresses the cable-gripping member against the respective cable. 15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the cable-gripping member includes a first plurality of cantilevered arms that apply a radially compressive force on the cable-gripping member. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein each of the first and second connectors include a first end and a cable receiving end opposite the first end, the cable receiving end including an aperture that receives the respective cable, wherein the compression member positions the cable-gripping member within the aperture and interfaces with the connector housing to lock a position of the compression member relative to the connector housing. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the compression member includes a second plurality of cantilevered arms that compresses the first plurality of cantilevered arms. 18. The system of claim 16 , wherein at least a portion of the first plurality of cantilevered arms include a plurality of elongate teeth that depress the respective cable jacket. 19. The system of claim 9 , wherein the conductors of each of the single twisted pair of conductor remain twisted together all the way up to the point where the termination end of each of the conductors terminates into their respective socket contacts. 20. A reduced-pair Ethernet patch cord system, comprising: a cable having a single pair of insulated conductors that are contained within a cable jacket; and a connector mounted on a first end of the cable, the connector including a connector housing containing exactly one pair of socket contacts comprising a first socket contact and a second socket contact, wherein the first socket contact is a tip socket contact that is vertically offset from the second socket which is a ring socket contact, and wherein an elongate axis of each of the first and second socket contacts are oriented in the same direction as an elongate axis of the connector housing.
