Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Examples of a module for housing unrelated electronic and electromechanical equipment for use during surgery. The module can include a lower section and a tower-like upper section. The lower section can house unrelated electronic and electromechanical equipment. The tower-like upper section can be located on top of the lower section. A water-resistant cowling can enclose at least a portion of the lower section and the tower-like upper section. A cartridge containing one or more ultraviolet-C producing lights can be protectively housed within the tower-like upper section. The cartridge containing one or more ultraviolet-C producing lights can be configured to emerge upward from a top of the tower-like upper section to substantially seat itself on the top of the tower-like upper section when activated allowing the ultraviolet-C light to disinfect the patient and staff-contacting upper surfaces of the equipment in the operating room.

What is claimed is: 1. A module for housing electronic and electromechanical equipment during surgery, the module comprising: a housing having a lower section and a tower-like upper section, wherein the lower section is configured to house unrelated waste heat-producing electronic and electromechanical surgical equipment during surgery, wherein a rear portion of the lower section is configured to fit into an unused space under an arm-board of a surgical table, wherein the tower-like upper section is located above the lower section, wherein the tower-like upper section is configured to be positioned adjacent an anesthesia side of an arm-board of the surgical table, and wherein the upper section is configured to accommodate mounting of equipment controls, display screens and monitor screens at a convenient height for viewing and operating; and at least a portion of an anesthetic gas machine is disposed in the housing. 2. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes one or more of: piping, a valve, a flow meter, an anesthetic gas vaporizer, a pressure monitor and a gas concentration monitor. 3. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes one or more of: a circle system breathing circuit with a CO 2 absorption canister, a ventilation bag and a mechanical ventilator. 4. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes a pressurized gas tank attached to the lower section, the pressurized gas tank configured to store at least one of: oxygen, nitrous oxide and air. 5. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes a connector configured to connect to a hospital's supply source, wherein the hospital's supply source includes at least one of: an oxygen supply line, a nitrous oxide supply line, an air supply line, a vacuum hose, an electrical power cord and a communication cable. 6. The module of claim 5 , wherein the connector is located proximate the top of the tower-like upper section and wherein the hospital's supply source is hanging from a ceiling of an operating room. 7. The module of claim 6 , wherein the hospital's supply source comprises plastic tubing that has been extruded into a coiled shape, wherein the plastic tubing is configured to be stretched and elongated in order to reach down from the ceiling to connect to the connector, and wherein the plastic tubing is configured to naturally recoil toward the ceiling when tension on the plastic tubing is released. 8. The module of claim 7 , wherein the plastic tubing that has been extruded into a coiled shape comprises nylon. 9. The module of claim 6 , wherein the hospital's supply source comprises an electrical power cord or a communication cable that is disposed within plastic tubing that is extruded into a coiled shape, wherein the plastic tubing is configured to be stretched to reach down from the ceiling to connect to the connector, and wherein the plastic tubing is configured to naturally recoil toward the ceiling when tension on the plastic tubing is released. 10. The module of claim 7 , wherein the plastic tubing that has been extruded into a coiled shape comprises nylon. 11. The module of claim 6 , further comprising an arm extending from a proximal end portion to a distal end portion, wherein the proximal end portion is rotatably coupled to the ceiling of the operating room through an axis at the proximal end, wherein the hospital's supply source is coupled to the arm near the distal end portion the arm, and wherein the hospital's supply source at the distal end portion is coupled to the housing. 12. A module for housing electronic and electromechanical equipment during surgery, the module comprising: a housing having a lower section and a tower-like upper section, wherein the lower section is configured to house unrelated waste heat-producing electronic and electromechanical surgical equipment during surgery, wherein the tower-like upper section is located above the lower section, wherein the tower-like upper section is configured to be positioned adjacent an anesthesia side of an arm-board of the surgical table; and a cable and hose management system is located on the patient side of the module, wherein the patient side of the module is configured to face a patient and provide the closest and most direct access to a patient when the module is positioned adjacent the anesthesia side of the arm-board of the surgical table; and at least a portion of an anesthetic gas machine is coupled to the housing. 13. The module of claim 12 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes one or more of: piping, a valve, a flow meter, an anesthetic gas vaporizer, a pressure monitor and a gas concentration monitor. 14. The module of claim 12 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes one or more of: a circle system breathing circuit with a CO 2 absorption canister, a ventilation bag and a mechanical ventilator. 15. The module of claim 12 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes a pressurized gas tank attached to the lower section, the pressurized gas tank configured to store at least one of: oxygen, nitrous oxide and air. 16. The module of claim 12 , wherein the at least a portion of the anesthetic gas machine includes a connector configured to connect to a hospital's supply source, wherein the hospital's supply source includes at least one of: an oxygen supply line, a nitrous oxide supply line, an air supply line, a vacuum hose, an electrical power cord and a communication cable. 17. The module of claim 16 , wherein the connector is located proximate the top of the tower-like upper section, and wherein the hospital's supply source is hanging from a ceiling of an operating room. 18.
