Antimicrobial compositions and methods for depositing or coating the antimicrobial or antibacterial compositions on a substrate to prevent microbial adhesion are provided. The antimicrobial composition may include a cationic polymer having a poly-allylamine backbone. A portion of the poly-allylamine backbone may be functionalized with at least one of a guanidine functional group and a biguanide functional group.

What is claimed is: 1. An antimicrobial substrate coated with sequential layers of cationic polymer and anionic polymer, comprising: a substrate, wherein the substrate is a surface within the oral cavity; and a first layer adsorbed on the surface of the substrate; and a second layer adsorbed on the surface of the first layer; wherein, one of the first layer or the second layer comprises a cationic polymer comprising a poly-allylamine backbone, and wherein about 75% of the poly-allylamine backbone is functionalized with a guanidine functional group and optionally further functionalized with a biguanide functional group; and wherein, the other of the first layer or the second layer comprises an anionic polymer, wherein the anionic polymer is a polyvinylmethylether/maleic anhydride (PV/MA) copolymer. 2. The antimicrobial substrate coated with sequential layers of cationic polymer according to claim 1 , wherein the poly-allylamine backbone of the cationic polymer is further functionalized with a biguanide functional group. 3. The antimicrobial substrate coated with sequential layers of cationic polymer according to claim 1 , further comprising: an orally acceptable vehicle. 4. An antimicrobial substrate coated with sequential layers of cationic polymer and anionic polymer according to claim 1 , wherein the polymer is a co-polymer of allylamine and allylguanidinium. 5. The antimicrobial composition of claim 2 , wherein the polymer is a co-polymer of allylamine and allylguanidinium.
