Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hollow interconnecting member for connecting vehicular frame members is provided. The hollow interconnecting member is formed of a metal material and defines a centerline. The hollow interconnecting member comprises a first end and a second end. The centerline extends through the first end and the second end. A plurality of walls cooperate to define a continuous passageway that extends between the first end and the second end and defines a first opening and a second opening at the first end and the second end, respectively. The hollow interconnecting member is formed as an as-cast one-piece construction.

What is claimed is: 1. A front body for a vehicle comprising: an upper frame; a lower frame positioned forward of a vehicle cabin and defining a load path, the lower frame is rigidly secured to the upper frame and includes a hollow casting that is deformable to absorb energy from an impact to the front of the vehicle, wherein the hollow casting includes a deformation feature that is deformable to absorb the energy from the impact to the front of the vehicle; a first reinforcement and a second reinforcement positioned inside the hollow casting, the first and second reinforcements extending between a first side and a second side of the hollow casting; a first steering component mount positioned outside the lower casting body on a first side opposite the first reinforcement; and a second steering component mount positioned outside the lower casting body on a first side opposite the second reinforcement, wherein the deformation feature is positioned between the first and second reinforcements; and a suspension component secured to the hollow casting. 2. The front body of claim 1 , wherein the deformation feature is positioned along the lower frame rearward of an axial crush zone. 3. The front body of claim 2 , wherein the deformation feature is an as-cast feature that bends to absorb the energy. 4. The front body of claim 1 , wherein the hollow casting further comprises a sleeve that surrounds a first opening of the hollow casting and is configured to receive a vehicular frame member. 5. A front body for a vehicle comprising: an upper frame; a lower frame positioned forward of a vehicle cabin and defining a load path, the lower frame is rigidly secured to the upper frame and includes a hollow casting that is deformable to absorb enemy from an impact to the front of the vehicle, wherein the hollow casting further comprises a sleeve that surrounds a first opening of the hollow casting and is configured to receive a vehicular frame member, wherein the hollow casting includes a first end and a second end, wherein the hollow casting defines a continuous passageway extending from the first end to the second end, and wherein the hollow casting further comprises a stop member that extends from the sleeve into the continuous passageway of the hollow casting; and a suspension component secured to the hollow casting. 6. The front body of claim 5 , wherein the hollow casting includes a deformation feature that is deformable to absorb the energy from, the impact to the front of the vehicle. 7. The front body of claim 6 , further comprising: a first reinforcement and a second reinforcement positioned inside the hollow casting, the first and second reinforcements extending between a first side and a second side of the hollow casting. 8. The front body of claim 7 , further comprising: a first steering component mount positioned outside the lower casting body on a first side opposite the first reinforcement; and a second steering component mount positioned outside the lower casting body on a first side opposite the second reinforcement, wherein the deformation feature is positioned between the first and second reinforcements. 9.
