This invention provides herbal compositions useful for increasing the therapeutic index of chemotherapeutic compounds. This invention also provides methods useful for improving the quality of life of an individual undergoing chemotherapy. Furthermore, this invention improves the treatment of disease by increasing the therapeutic index of chemotherapy drugs by administering the herbal composition PHY906 to a mammal undergoing such chemotherapy.

We claim: 1. A method of treating cancer in a mammal in need thereof comprising administering to the mammal a therapeutically effective amount of: i) an herbal preparation comprising Scutellaria, Glycyrrhiza, Ziziphus , and Paeonia ; and ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising sorafenib, wherein said cancer is hepatocellular cancer, colorectal cancer or pancreatic cancer. 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said herbal preparation comprises Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba , and Paeonia lactiflora. 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein said cancer is hepatocellular cancer. 4. The method according to claim 2 wherein said cancer is hepatocellular cancer. 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein said cancer is colorectal cancer. 6. The method according to claim 2 wherein said cancer is colorectal cancer. 7. The method according to claim 1 wherein said cancer is pancreatic cancer. 8. The method according to claim 2 wherein said cancer is pancreatic cancer. 9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route and sorafenib is administered via oral route. 10. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route and sorafenib is administered via oral route. 11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered before sorafenib is administered. 12. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered before sorafenib is administered. 13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the mammal is a human. 14. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the mammal is a human. 15. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the mammal is a human. 16. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the mammal is a human. 17. A method of inhibiting the growth of a tumor comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof: i) an herbal preparation comprising Scutellaria, Glycyrrhiza, Ziziphus , and Paeonia ; and ii) a chemotherapeutic formulation comprising sorafenib, wherein said tumor is a tumor of a gastrointestinal cancer. 18. The method according to claim 17 wherein said gastrointestinal cancer is hepatocellular cancer, colorectal cancer or pancreatic cancer. 19. The method according to claim 17 wherein said herbal preparation comprises Scutellaria baicalensis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Ziziphus jujuba , and Paeonia lactiflora. 20. The method according to claim 18 wherein said cancer is hepatocellular cancer. 21. The method according to claim 19 wherein said cancer is hepatocellular cancer. 22. The method according to claim 18 wherein said cancer is colorectal cancer. 23. The method according to claim 19 wherein said cancer is colorectal cancer. 24. The method according to claim 18 wherein said cancer is pancreatic cancer. 25. The method according to claim 19 wherein said cancer is pancreatic cancer. 26. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the herbal preparation is administered via oral route and sorafenib is administered via oral route. 27.
