Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A connector for fluidly coupling proximal and distal tubular segments of a fluid conduit is provided. In one embodiment, the connector can include a connector body having an outer surface defining a first outer perimeter and an inner surface defining a lumen. The connector can also include a connecting device having an open configuration and a plurality of closed configurations. The connecting device can include first and second members configured to engage each other to secure the fluid conduit to the connector. The connecting device can also include a plurality of closed configurations for securing fluid conduits of different sizes.

What is claimed is: 1. A vascular access system for providing blood flow between two locations in a cardiovascular system of a patient, the vascular access system comprising: a conduit comprising a conduit lumen, the conduit comprising a first end configured to be coupled to a blood vessel; and a connector comprising: a distal portion configured to engage a second end of the conduit; a body extending from the distal portion to a proximal portion; a flange disposed on the body between the distal portion and the proximal portion; a connecting device comprising a first and a second member; wherein the first and second members are selectively disposable in a first receiving configuration and a second engaged configuration, wherein in the first receiving configuration the connecting device is configured to receive and couple to the conduit, wherein in the second engaged configuration the connecting device is configured to provide a fluid pathway from the conduit through the connecting device, wherein the first and second members are each pivotably coupled to the connector, and wherein the first and second member are both coupled about the same pivot point. 2. The vascular access system of claim 1 , where the first and second members comprise engagement features. 3. The vascular access system of claim 2 , wherein the engagement features comprise gripping structures. 4. The vascular access system of claim 3 , wherein the gripping structures comprise a first plurality of notches formed on a surface of the first member and a second plurality of notches formed on a surface of the second member, the first and second plurality of notches configured to engage when the first and second members are engaged with one another. 5. The vascular access system of claim 1 , further comprising a safety mechanism configured to lock the first and second members in the second engaged configuration. 6. The vascular access system of claim 5 , wherein the safety mechanism is configured to lock the first and second members after interaction between at least one engagement feature disposed on the first or second member. 7. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein transition from the first receiving configuration to the second engaged configuration is a one way transition fixedly coupling the conduit to the connecting device. 8. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second members are each pivotably coupled to the flange. 9. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein the connecting device further comprises a hinge mechanism on the flange pivotably connecting the first and second members to the flange. 10. The vascular access system of claim 9 , further comprising a spring disposed about the hinge mechanism, the spring configured to bias the connector in the first receiving configuration. 11. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein the connector is configured to secure conduits of varied outer diameters to the connector. 12. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein the connector further comprises a plurality of engagement features disposed on an outer surface of the proximal portion. 13. The vascular access system of claim 1 , wherein the connector further comprises shrouds extending out from a portion of each of the first and second members. 14. The vascular access system of claim 13 , wherein the shrouds further comprise a plurality of engagement features disposed on an inner surface of the shrouds. 15. A method for coupling tubular segments of a fluid conduit in a cardiovascular system, the method comprising: obtaining the connector of claim 1 ; engaging an end of a vascular conduit with the connector such that a lumen of the vascular conduit is in fluid communication with the lumen of the connector; and actuating the first and second members from the first receiving configuration to the second engaged configuration such that the vascular conduit is coupled to the connecting device. 16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the vascular conduit comprises a vascular graft. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising coupling the vascular conduit to the connector.
