A method and apparatus for allocating resources to a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) includes the WTRU transmitting a signature sequence to a Node B, receiving an acknowledge signal from the Node B, and determining a default resource index. The resource index is associated with enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) parameters.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, performed by a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU), of allocating Uplink (UL) data channel resources for transmitting an UL data channel signal, the method comprising: receiving a first subset of a set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters via an allocation message associated with a randomly selected signature sequence transmitted by the WTRU; receiving a second subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters via a system information block (SIB) including information indicating a mapping of the randomly selected signature sequence to a plurality of UL data channel resources for transmitting the UL data channel signal; and transmitting the UL data channel signal using any of the plurality of UL data channel resources determined according to the mapping. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the allocation message is received on an acquisition indicator channel (AICH). 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters is based on an access class of the WTRU. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters includes common UL data channel parameters. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UL data channel signal is transmitted on condition that a RACH preamble transmission phase of the WTRU is terminated. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the randomly selected signature sequence is selected from a plurality of signature sequences that are each associated with a plurality of UL channel resources. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second subsets of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters are used only for transmitting UL data channel signals on UL data channels. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information indicating a mapping includes information identifying the randomly selected signature sequence and information indicating the plurality UL data channel resources. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the randomly selected signature sequence is associated with a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) resource. 10. A wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU) including a transmitter, a receiver, and a processor, wherein: the receiver is configured to: receive a first subset of a set of uplink (UL) data channel resource allocation parameters via an allocation message associated with a randomly selected signature sequence transmitted by the WTRU, and receive a second subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters via a system information block (SIB) including information indicating a mapping of the randomly selected signature sequence to a plurality of UL data channel resources; and the transmitter is configured to transmit a UL data channel signal using any of the plurality of UL data channel resources determined according to the mapping. 11. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the allocation message is received on an acquisition indicator channel (AICH). 12. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the first subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters is based on an access class of the WTRU. 13. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the second subset of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters includes common UL data channel parameters. 14. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit the UL data channel signal on condition that a RACH preamble transmission phase of the WTRU is terminated. 15. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the processor is further configured to randomly select a signature sequence from a plurality of signature sequences that are each associated with a plurality of UL channel resources. 16. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the first and second subsets of the set of UL data channel resource allocation parameters are used only for transmitting UL data channel signals on UL data channels. 17. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the information indicating a mapping includes information identifying the randomly selected signature sequence and information indicating the plurality UL data channel resources. 18. The WTRU of claim 10 , wherein the randomly selected signature sequence is associated with a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) resource.
