Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of assembling a camera for a vehicular vision system includes providing a front housing portion, a rear housing portion and a circuit element having an imager disposed thereat. One of the front housing portion and the circuit element includes a protrusion protruding therefrom and the other of the front housing portion and the circuit element includes a receiving portion for at least partially receiving the protrusion when the circuit element is positioned at the front housing portion to align the imager with the lens. When the circuit element is positioned at the front housing portion to align the imager with the lens, the protrusion is at least partially received at the receiving portion and is attached thereat. A damper or retention feature is provided at an opposite side of the imager from the protrusion and receiving portion.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of assembling a camera for a vehicular vision system, said method comprising: providing a camera housing front portion; providing a camera housing rear portion; providing a circuit element having an imager disposed thereat, wherein the imager comprises an imaging array having a plurality of photosensing elements arranged in multiple rows and multiple columns of photosensing elements, and wherein the imager has a first side and a second side laterally opposite the first side; wherein one of the camera housing front portion and the circuit element comprises a protrusion protruding therefrom; wherein the other of the camera housing front portion and the circuit element comprises a receiving portion configured for receiving the protrusion; positioning the circuit element at the camera housing front portion; wherein positioning the circuit element at the camera housing front portion comprises at least partially receiving the protrusion at the receiving portion; bonding the protrusion at the receiving portion when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion; wherein the protrusion and the receiving portion are disposed so as to be laterally spaced from and adjacent to the first side of the imager when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion and bonded at the receiving portion; providing one of (i) a damper disposed between the circuit element and the camera housing front portion so as to be laterally spaced from and adjacent to the second side of the imager when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion, and (ii) a retention feature comprising (a) a notch at the circuit element laterally spaced from and adjacent to the second side of the imager and (b) a second protrusion at the front housing portion that engages the notch when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion; wherein no other part of the camera housing front portion is attached at the circuit element when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion and bonded at the receiving portion; and mating the rear housing portion with the front housing portion to encase the circuit element and the imager. 2. A method of assembling a camera for a vehicular vision system, said method comprising: providing a camera housing front portion; providing a camera housing rear portion; providing a circuit element having an imager disposed thereat, wherein the imager comprises an imaging array having a plurality of photosensing elements arranged in multiple rows and multiple columns of photosensing elements, and wherein the imager has a first side and a second side laterally opposite the first side; wherein one of the camera housing front portion and the circuit element comprises a protrusion protruding therefrom; wherein the other of the camera housing front portion and the circuit element comprises a receiving portion configured for receiving the protrusion; positioning the circuit element at the camera housing front portion; wherein positioning the circuit element at the camera housing front portion comprises at least partially receiving the protrusion at the receiving portion; bonding the protrusion at the receiving portion when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion; wherein the protrusion and the receiving portion are disposed so as to be laterally spaced from and adjacent to the first side of the imager when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion and bonded at the receiving portion; providing a damper disposed between the circuit element and the camera housing front portion so as to be laterally spaced from and adjacent to the second side of the imager when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion; and mating the rear housing portion with the front housing portion to encase the circuit element and the imager. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein no other part of the camera housing front portion is attached at the circuit element when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion and bonded at the receiving portion. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing one of (i) a damper and (ii) a retention feature comprises providing a retention feature comprising (a) a notch at the circuit element laterally spaced from and adjacent to the second side of the imager and (b) a second protrusion at the front housing portion that engages the notch when the circuit element is positioned at the camera housing front portion with the protrusion at least partially received at the receiving portion. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the camera housing front portion comprises the protrusion protruding therefrom and the circuit element comprises the receiving portion. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the receiving portion comprises a surface of the circuit element that is engaged by the protrusion and bonded to the protrusion. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the receiving portion comprises an aperture through the circuit element that the protrusion passes at least partially therethrough when the protrusion is received at the receiving portion. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the protrusion is bonded to the receiving portion via adhesive disposed at and in the aperture. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the protrusion comprises a post having a non-circular cross section and wherein the receiving portion comprises an aperture or recess having a non-circular shape that corresponds with the non-circular cross section of the post. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the post comprises a hollow post that has adhesive dispensed therein to hold the adhesive in place before being cured during an alignment process. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the circuit element comprises a printed circuit board. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the camera housing rear portion comprises providing electrical connectors of the camera housing rear portion that, when the camera housing rear portion is mated with the camera housing front portion, electrically connect to circuitry of the circuit element. 13.
