A method of fabricating a composite material, the method comprises the steps of a) providing a first layer of a fibre reinforced polymer, preferably a thermoset FRP, b) providing an array of thermoplastic islands across at least a proportion of a major surface of the first layer, c) providing a second layer of a fibre reinforced polymer, preferably a thermoset FRP, d) laying the second layer over at least some of the islands, and e) securing the first and second layers together. There is also disclosed a composite which comprises a first layer of a fibre reinforced polymer and a second layer of a fibre reinforced polymer, between which is an intervening layer comprising an array of thermoplastic islands.

The invention claimed is: 1. A composite material comprising a first and second layer and a thermoplastic material, the first and second layer each comprising a thermoset fiber reinforced polymer; the thermoplastic material being provided as a discontinuous distribution in the form of an array of dots having higher local concentration of the thermoplastic material, and wherein the thermoplastic material is located at an interface between the first and second layer, a portion of the dots consisting essentially of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and a remaining portion of the dots consisting essentially of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA); and wherein each of the dots in the array has an area of less than 1 mm 2 and the array of dots extends over 20-80% of the area of the first layer. 2. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second layers are formed from the same or different thermoset polymers and wherein the fibers in the thermoset fiber reinforced polymer comprise the same or different fibers. 3. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the thermoset polymers are selected from the group consisting of epoxy, polyesters, vinyl esters, phenolic resins and other cross-linked thermosetting polymers. 4. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the fibers are continuous or discontinuous, and wherein the fibers are selected from the group consisting of aligned filaments, aligned tows, braided mats, knitted mats, woven mats, braided sheets, knitted sheets, and woven sheets. 5. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the fibers are selected from the group consisting of carbon fibers, aramid fibers, glass fibers, glass ceramic fibers, plastics fibers, hemp fibers, wood fibers, organic fibers, and inorganic fibers. 6. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the volume fraction of fiber-to-polymer is from 0.01 to 5% within at least one of the first and second layer. 7. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the array of dots of thermoplastic material either extends over some of the interface, or is localized in certain defined regions. 8. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic material has a melting point of 50 to 200° C. 9. The composite material according to claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic material has a number average molecular weight (NAMW) in the range of 3000 to 50000. 10. The composite material according to claim 1 , comprising a further intervening layer comprising an array of dots of thermoplastic polymer provided on the second layer. 11. The composite material according to claim 10 , comprising a third layer comprising a thermoset fiber reinforced polymer overlying the further intervening layer.
