Official abstract text for this publication.
A magnetic and electrical interface that may be used with an assistive device. The interface comprises a proximal connector and a distal connector. The proximal connector may be attached to a liner for a residual limb and the distal connector may be attached to a hard socket or other aspect of an assistive device. Other aspects of and uses for the connector interface are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for attaching a prosthesis to a limb, the system comprising: a liner having an opening for insertion of a limb; sensors supported on the liner; a proximal connector configured for attachment to the liner, the proximal connector having a planar distal surface; first magnets arranged at the planar distal surface in an alternating polarity; conductive screws arranged at the planar distal surface and operatively interconnected with the sensors on the liner; a distal connector configured for attachment to the prosthesis, the distal connector having a planar proximal surface; second magnets arranged at the planar proximal surface in an alternating polarity for alignment and magnetic attachment with the first magnets at the planar distal surface; and conductive spring pins arranged at the planar proximal surface for alignment and electrically conductive contact with the conductive screws at the planar distal surface when the first and second magnets are aligned in magnetic attachment. 2. A system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the proximal connector includes a housing containing a printed circuit board configured to condition signals, and the housing has a planar distal surface defining the first end face. 3. A system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the housing further contains a controller area network connector. 4. A system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the distal connector has a housing containing a controller for controlling the prosthesis, and the housing has a planar proximal surface defining the second end face. 5. A system as defined in claim 1 , further comprising a socket having an opening for insertion of the liner and the proximal connector, wherein the distal connector is fastened within the socket. 6. A system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the liner has a gel portion and the sensors are embedded within the gel portion of the liner. 7. A system for attaching a prosthesis to a limb, the system comprising: a liner having an opening for insertion of a limb; sensors supported on the liner; a proximal connector configured for attachment to the liner, the proximal connector having a first end face; first magnets arranged at the first end face in an alternating polarity; electrical contacts arranged at the first end face separately from the first magnets and operatively interconnected with the sensors on the liner; a distal connector configured for attachment to the prosthesis, the distal connector having a second end face; second magnets arranged at the second end face in an alternating polarity for alignment and magnetic attachment with the first magnets at the first end face; and electrical contacts arranged at the second end face separately from second magnets for alignment and electrically conductive contact with the first electrical contacts at the first end face when the first magnets and the second magnets are aligned in magnetic attachment; wherein the contacts include conductive screws at one of the end faces and spring pins arranged for alignment and contact with the conductive screws at the other of end faces. 8. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the conductive screws are all arranged at one of the first and second end faces, and the spring pins are all arranged at the other of the first and second end faces. 9. A system as defined in claim 8 , wherein the conductive screws are arranged at the first end face and the spring pins are arranged at the second end face.
