Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An embodiment of the present invention is a system to maximize efficiency as a mobile terminal receives data signals transmitted through multiple satellite spot beams. The multiple spot beams can be broadcast via a single satellite or multiple satellites. As a mobile terminal travels throughout a region, the system determines which spot beam would delivers data in the most efficient manner possible. This system takes into account multiple factors, including but not limited to velocity of the mobile terminal, traffic within a spot beam, business affiliations, etc. Once the system takes into account the various factors, an embodiment of the present invention generates a relative weighted factor that is subsequently associated with various available spot beams. Based on rankings of the weighted factors associated with each spot beam, the system may choose to receive data from a different spot beam.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of selecting a satellite spot beam for a mobile terminal, performed by the mobile terminal, comprising: determining a current location of the mobile terminal (current MTL); determining a list of candidate spot beams where the current MTL is contained within a perimeter of each such candidate spot beam; and determining a weighted distance factor (WDF) for each of one or more of the candidate spot beams based on the current MTL relative to a location within the candidate spot beam where signal strength is strongest; determining a ranked list of the one or more candidate spot beams for the current MTL based on their respective WDFs, where the ranking from highest to lowest is in the order of lowest to highest WDF; and determining an optimal candidate spot beam for the current MTL as the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the WDF for each of the one or more candidate spot beams is determined relative to candidate spot beams of the one or more candidate spot beams neighboring that candidate spot beam. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the ranking of the one or more candidate spot beams is further based on one or more of traffic load of each of the one or more candidate spot beams, satellite traffic load, business considerations, quality of service, angle relative to the mobile terminal, and satellite preference. 4. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising: determining a projected trajectory of the mobile terminal; and determining whether the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams is optimal based on the projected trajectory of the mobile terminal. 5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the determination of the optimal candidate spot beam is configured to minimize switching of the mobile terminal between spot beams over the projected trajectory of the mobile terminal. 6. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the determination whether the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams is optimal comprises: determining a plurality of look ahead points on the projected trajectory of the mobile terminal; determining, for each look ahead point, a list of the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams; modifying the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL by successively setting, for each look ahead point, the WDF for each of the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL based on whether that candidate spot beam is in the list of WDFs for the respective look ahead point; after completion of the modification of the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL for each look ahead point, determining a weighted look ahead factor (WLAF) for each of the one or more candidate spot beams based on the respective modified WDFs for all of the look ahead points; determining a ranked list of WLAFs for the one or more candidate spot beams by ranking the one or more candidate spot beams based on their respective WALFs, where the ranking from highest to lowest is in the order of highest to lowest WLAF; and determining the optimal candidate spot beam for the current MTL as the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams based on the WLAFs. 7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the modification of the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL comprises setting the WDF for each such candidate spot beam such that (i) when the respective candidate spot beam is not in the list of WDFs for the respective look ahead point, the WDF for the respective candidate spot beam in the ranked list for the current MTL is set to 1 and (ii) when the respective candidate spot beam is in the list of WDFs for the respective look ahead point, the WDF for the respective candidate spot beam in the ranked list for the current MTL is set to the WDF for that candidate spot beam in the list of WDFs for the respective look ahead point. 8. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising: determining a current speed of the mobile terminal; and determining whether the speed of the mobile terminal exceeds a predetermined threshold, wherein, when the speed of the mobile terminal exceeds the predetermined threshold, the determination whether the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beam is optimal comprises: determining a plurality of look ahead points on the projected trajectory of the mobile terminal; determining, for each look ahead point, a list of the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams; modifying the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL by successively setting, for each look ahead point, the WDF for each of the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL based on whether that candidate spot beam is in the list of WDFs for the respective look ahead point; after completion of the modification of the WDFs for the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list for the current MTL for each look ahead point, determining a weighted look ahead factor (WLAF) for each of the one or more candidate spot beams based on the respective modified WDFs for all of the look ahead points; determining a ranked list of WLAFs for the one or more candidate spot beams by ranking the one or more candidate spot beams based on their respective WALFs, where the ranking from highest to lowest is in the order of highest to lowest WLAF; and determining the optimal candidate spot beam for the current MTL as the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams based on the WLAFs. 9. A mobile terminal configured to select a satellite spot beam comprising: a transceiver; and one or more processors, wherein the one or more processors are configured to: determine a current location of the mobile terminal (current MTL); determine a list of candidate spot beams where the current MTL is contained within a perimeter of each such candidate spot beam; and determine a weighted distance factor (WDF) for each of one or more of the candidate spot beams based on the current MTL relative to a location within the candidate spot beam where signal strength is strongest; determine a ranked list of the one or more candidate spot beams for the current MTL based on their respective WDFs, where the ranking from highest to lowest is in the order of lowest to highest WDF; and determine an optimal candidate spot beam for the current MTL as the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams in the ranked list. 10. The mobile terminal according to claim 9 , wherein the WDF for each of the one or more candidate spot beams is determined relative to candidate spot beams of the one or more candidate spot beams neighboring that candidate spot beam. 11. The mobile terminal according to claim 9 , wherein the ranking of the one or more candidate spot beams is further based on one or more of traffic load of each of the one or more candidate spot beams, satellite traffic load, business considerations, quality of service, angle relative to the mobile terminal, and satellite preference. 12. The mobile terminal according to claim 9 , further comprising: determining a projected trajectory of the mobile terminal; and determining whether the highest ranked of the one or more candidate spot beams is optimal based on the projected trajectory of the mobile terminal. 13. The mobile terminal according to claim 12 , wherein the determination of the optimal candidate spot beam is configured to minimi
