Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An infant warming system includes a body temperature probe, a peripheral temperature probe, and at least two identical input jacks, each input jack configured to receive either one of the first connector or the second connector. The body temperature probe has a body temperature sensor removably fixable to an infant's torso to measure a body temperature of the infant, and a first connector configured to connect to an input jack to transmit the body temperature measurement. The peripheral temperature probe includes a peripheral temperature sensor removably fixable to the infant's extremity to measure a peripheral temperature of the infant, and a second connector configured to connect to an input jack to transmit the peripheral temperature measurement. The system further includes a probe detection module to automatically detect whether each input jack is connected to the peripheral temperature probe or the body temperature probe.

We claim: 1. An infant warming system comprising: a body temperature probe having: a body temperature sensor removably fixable to an infant's torso to measure a body temperature of the infant; a first connector configured to connect to an input jack to transmit the body temperature measurement; a peripheral temperature probe having: a peripheral temperature sensor removably fixable to the infant's extremity to measure a peripheral temperature of the infant, wherein the peripheral temperature sensor includes a thermistor configured to measure the peripheral temperature of the infant and a fixed resistor of a predetermined fixed resistance value in parallel with the thermistor; a second connector configured to connect to the input jack to transmit the peripheral temperature measurement; at least two identical input jacks, each identical input jack configured to receive either one of the first connector or the second connector; and a probe detection module configured to determine a probe resistance for each identical input jack and to automatically distinguish whether each one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the peripheral temperature probe or the body temperature probe based on the measured resistance. 2. The infant warming system of claim 1 , wherein the probe detection module detects that the respective one of the at least two identical input jack is connected to the peripheral temperature sensor when the measured resistance is within a predetermined range of the fixed resistance value. 3. The infant warming system of claim 2 , wherein the body temperature sensor of the body temperature probe has a first thermistor configured to detect a first body temperature of the infant and a second thermistor configured to detect a second body temperature of the infant, the first thermistor and the second thermistor connected to the first connector; and wherein the predetermined range of the fixed resistance value is outside of a resistance range of the first thermistor and the second thermistor. 4. The infant warming system of claim 3 , further comprising a temperature determination module that: determines the body temperature for the infant based on at least one of the first body temperature and the second body temperature; determines a temperature differential between the body temperature measurement for the infant and the peripheral temperature measurement; and displays the temperature differential. 5. The infant warming system of claim 4 , wherein the temperature determination module further: compares the temperature differential to an ideal temperature differential range; and generates a heat stress alert if the temperature differential is below the ideal differential range and generates a cold stress alert if the temperature differential is above the ideal differential range. 6. The infant warming system of claim 4 , wherein the probe detection module detects that the respective one of the at least two identical input jack is connected to the peripheral temperature sensor based on the resistance of the first thermistor and the second thermistor; and wherein the temperature determination module further controls a heater system based on at least one of the first body temperature and the second body temperature. 7. The infant warming system of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral temperature probe includes at least one feature that visually distinguishes it from the body temperature probe, and the body temperature probe includes at least one feature that visually distinguishes it from the peripheral temperature probe. 8. The infant warming system of claim 7 , wherein the peripheral temperature probe further includes a fixation band configured to removably fix the peripheral temperature sensor to the infant's hand or foot and prevent fixation of the peripheral temperature sensor to the infant's torso. 9. The infant warming system of claim 8 , wherein the fixation band has a heat reflective outer surface that insulates the peripheral temperature sensor from an external heat source to the infant. 10. The infant warming system of claim 7 , wherein the peripheral temperature probe includes an extremity demarcation and the body temperature probe includes a body demarcation, wherein the extremity demarcation and the body demarcation each include at least one of a different color and a different symbol. 11. The infant warming system of claim 1 , wherein the probe detection module compares the body temperature measurement and the peripheral temperature measurement and generates a probe error alert if the peripheral temperature measurement is greater than or equal to the body temperature measurement. 12. An infant warming system comprising: a body temperature probe having: a body temperature sensor removably fixable to an infant's torso to measure a body temperature of the infant; a first connector configured to connect to an input jack to transmit the body temperature measurement; a peripheral temperature probe having: a peripheral temperature sensor removably fixable to the infant's extremity to measure a peripheral temperature of the infant; a second connector configured to connect to the input jack to transmit the peripheral temperature measurement; at least two identical input jacks, each identical input jack configured to receive either one of the first connector or the second connector; and a probe detection module configured to determine a probe resistance for each identical input jack and to automatically distinguish whether each identical input jack is connected to the peripheral temperature probe or the body temperature probe based on the probe resistances. 13. The infant warming system of claim 12 , wherein the probe detection module determines that the respective one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the peripheral temperature probe when the probe resistance is within a predetermined resistance range and determines that the respective one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the body temperature probe when the probe resistance is not within the predetermined resistance range. 14. The infant warming system of claim 12 , wherein the peripheral temperature sensor includes a thermistor configured to measure the peripheral temperature of the infant, and a fixed resistor of a predetermined fixed resistance value in parallel with the thermistor; and wherein the probe detection module is further configured to detects that the respective one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the peripheral temperature probe based on a comparison of the probe resistance to the predetermined fixed resistance value. 15. The infant warming system of claim 14 , wherein the body temperature sensor of the body temperature probe has a first thermistor configured to detect a first body temperature of the infant and a second thermistor configured to detect a second body temperature of the infant, the first thermistor and the second thermistor connected to the first connector; and wherein the predetermined range of the fixed resistance value is outside of a resistance range of the first thermistor and the second thermistor. 16. The infant warming system of claim 12 , further comprising a temperature determination module that: determines that one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the peripheral temperature probe and another one of the at least two identical input jacks is connected to the body temperature probe; determines a temperature differential between the body temperature measurement fo
