Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Some embodiments provide for an inspiratory limb for a breathing circuit that includes a first segment that comprises a first heater wire circuit and a second segment that comprises a second heater wire circuit. The inspiratory limb can include an intermediate connector that includes a connection circuit that electrically couples the first heater wire circuit to the second heater wire circuit. The inspiratory limb can be configured to operate in two modes wherein, in a first mode, electrical power passes through the first electrical connection to provide power to the first heater wire circuit without providing power to the second heater wire circuit, and in a second mode, electrical power pass through the first electrical connection to provide power to both the first heater wire circuit and the second heater wire circuit.

What is claimed is: 1. A medical tube comprising: a first segment and a second segment, each segment comprising: an elongate hollow body spirally wound to form an elongate tube having a longitudinal axis, a lumen extending along the longitudinal axis, and a hollow wall surrounding the lumen, wherein the elongate hollow body has in a transverse cross-section a wall defining at least a portion of the lumen of the elongate tube; a reinforcement portion extending along a length of the elongate hollow body being spirally wound between adjacent turns of the elongate hollow body, wherein the reinforcement portion defines at least a portion of the lumen of the elongate tube and is more rigid than the wall of the elongate hollow body; and one or more conductive filaments embedded or encapsulated within the reinforcement portion; and a segment connector adapted to connect the first segment to the second segment, the segment connector comprising: connection pads configured to couple the one or more conductive filaments from the first segment to the one or more conductive filaments from the second segment; and a power diode coupled to the connection pads, wherein the power diode prevents power of a first polarity that is delivered to the one or more conductive filaments of the first segment from being delivered to the one or more conductive filaments of the second segment, and wherein the power diode allows power of a second polarity that is delivered to the one or more conductive filaments of the first segment to be delivered to the one or more conductive filaments of the second segment, wherein a heater circuit comprising the one or more conductive filaments of the first and second segments is independent of another heater circuit that heats another tube. 2. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the lumen is configured to convey gases in a breathing circuit. 3. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein one or more sensor wires are embedded within the reinforcement portion. 4. The medical tube of claim 3 , wherein the one or more sensor wires are configured to be connected to a temperature sensor, a flow rate sensor, an oxygen concentration sensor, or a humidity sensor. 5. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein lengths of the first segment and the second segment are different. 6. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the first segment and the second segment are mechanically and electrically coupled by the segment connector. 7. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the medical tube is configured to be used in conjunction with an incubator, wherein a portion of the medical tube is inserted into the incubator. 8. The medical tube of claim 7 , wherein the first segment is located outside the incubator and the second segment corresponds to the portion of the medical tube inserted into the incubator. 9. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the elongate hollow body is filled with a gas. 10. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the medical tube is flexible. 11. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the elongate hollow body is perforated. 12. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcement portion is joined between adjacent turns of the spirally wound elongate hollow body and forms in a longitudinal cross-section a plurality of bubbles. 13. The medical tube of claim 12 , wherein a width of each of the plurality of bubbles is greater than a height of each of the plurality of bubbles. 14. The medical tube of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of bubbles are each separated by a gap in the longitudinal cross-section between the adjacent turns of the elongate hollow body. 15. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the one or more conductive filaments are spaced apart from each other in the reinforcement portion. 16. The medical tube of claim 1 , wherein the elongate hollow body comprises two or more portions, such that two or more bubbles are formed in a longitudinal cross-section. 17. A medical tube comprising: a first segment comprising one or more heater wires; a second segment comprising one or more heater wires; a connection circuit adapted to connect the first and second segments, the connection circuit comprising a diode; and a controller, wherein each of the first and second segments further comprises a spirally wound elongate hollow body and a spirally wound elongate bead member, the spirally wound elongate hollow body forming at least in part an elongate tube comprising a longitudinal axis and a lumen extending along the longitudinal axis, the elongate bead member forming at least a portion of the lumen and providing support for the elongate hollow body, and wherein the controller is adapted to selectively switch between a first mode in which the controller provides power to the first segment, and a second mode in which the controller provides power to the first and second segments, wherein a heater circuit comprising the one or more heater wires of the first and second segments is independent of another heater circuit that heats another tube. 18. The medical tube of claim 17 , wherein one or more sensor wires are embedded within the elongate bead member. 19. The medical tube of claim 17 , wherein a patient-end sensor is positioned at a patient-end of the second segment, the first segment comprising a first sensor wire circuit and the second segment comprising a second sensor wire circuit, the connection circuit comprising a sensor connection circuit that couples the first sensor wire circuit to the second sensor wire circuit, and wherein the patient-end sensor is coupled to the second sensor wire circuit. 20. The medical tube of claim 19 , wherein the patient-end sensor is a temperature sensor, a flow rate sensor, an oxygen concentration sensor, or a humidity sensor. 21. The medical tube of claim 17 , wherein the elongate bead member comprises a hollow body and forms in a longitudinal cross-section a plurality of bubbles with a flattened surface at the lumen of the elongate tube. 22. The medical tube of claim 17 , wherein the elongate hollow body comprises in a transverse cross-section a wall defining at least a portion of the lumen of the elongate tube. 23. The medical tube of claim 17 , wherein the first mode and the second mode are defined by a direction of current provided by a power source.
